Political eyesore pollution

May 11, 2012
The Advertiser-Tribune

With the county and city looking to increase revenue without raising taxes on individuals, I would like to offer a point to ponder. Because every candidate for elected office is only looking to give back to society and every PAC is only looking at what is in our best interest, I see no reason why they would object to the following proposal.

I would suggest the following "Political Eyesore Pollution Tax" that would be in effect for all elections concerning county, township and city.

1) All yard signs have a tax of $2.50.

2) Signs larger than standard yard sign have a tax of $25.

3) Billboards have a tax of $300.

4) All mailings have a charge of 5 cents.

Could you just imagine the revenue this tax would generate? The county could earmark this income for EMS and EMT training and retention. The townships could have additional income for road improvements. The city could allocate this money strictly for the parks, which sorely need all the financial help they can receive. One thing for sure: We can't let our elected official's place this money in the general fund, then it no longer would serve a specific purpose.

Now, I know someone will cry foul (Democratic and Republican parties, current sitting elected officials), but you know it's time we look at things just a little different in today's world. I can see no reason why any individual businessman or woman who is not a politician would not support this tax. This plan is a moneymaker for the county, townships and city. Yes, they can put this tax in place before the November elections; the politicians just have to do what is best interest of the people they serve.

Sincerely,

Kevin Carrigan,

Tiffin
