Developmental Disabilities board talks programs, year-end business

FOSTORIA - The Seneca County Board of Developmental Disabilities board members talked about summer programs during a meeting Tuesday afternoon at Fostoria Re-Ads.

Children's Services Director Rick Gagnon said the Help Me Grow program would be five weeks where families can participate in playgroups and activities at the Family Learning Center, Fostoria Early Childhood Center, Opportunity Center Park, Franciscan Earth Literacy Center at St. Francis and Meadowbrook Park.

Six- through 21-year-old clients enrolled in the School of Opportunity have a chance to participate in summer leisure and recreational activities as well. The sessions are 9 a.m.-1 p.m. three times weekly for a four-week

period.

Superintendent Lew Hurst announced Gov. John Kasich has created a panel that encourages offering community employment options to people with developmental disabilities before placing them in a sheltered workshop.

Patrick Steyer graduates from the Leadership Seneca County class Tuesday with Marta Zaleha. LSC graduate Lisa Kraus has been appointed to the Governor's Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council, according to Hurst.

Graduation at the School of Opportunity takes place at 1:30 p.m. today in the facility gymnasium. Enrollment projections for next year expect five new students.

Board members recognized Debbie Hoepf, who served 32 years as a teacher and early intervention specialist at the Opportunity Center, while Carolyn Balliett spent 10 years as an assistant cook.

Business Manager Dick Williams reported receiving $1.9 million from real estate taxes. An upcoming finance committee meeting is to set the final 2013 budget.

In other business, the board:

Approved the revisions to the 2012-13 and 2013-14 program calendars.

Approved appropriation of unused 2011 funds for supported living-contract services, family support services-supplies and donation funds totaling $23,651.62.

Is requesting Seneca County commissioners authorize a credit card for Seneca County Board of DD use with a credit limit of $5,000.

Appropriated $10,000 to the STIRS program for speaking/training stipends for individuals promoting self-determination and advocacy.

Approved the 2012 summer Help Me Grow Early Intervention program not to exceed $15,919.

Approved the 2012 summer activities program not to exceed $6,500.

Approved the sale of two Northland Homes and Properties homes in Tiffin.

Approved renewal of services to five clients.

Reviewed 13 policies regarding transportation issues and revised three.

The 169 Board is to meet next at 5 p.m. June 12 at the Opportunity Center.
