Hearing tonight for Sunny Farms

May 9, 2012
The Advertiser-Tribune

Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has set a public information session and hearing at 6:30 p.m. today to accept comments on a proposed expansion of Sunny Farms Landfill in Seneca County. The meeting is to take place at Fostoria Municipal Court, 213 S. Main St., Fostoria.

According to a release from the EPA, the meeting is to include information about two draft permits under consideration - a permit for expansion of the landfill and an associated wastewater discharge permit modification. The landfill is at 12500 W. CR 18, north of US 23.

The release states Sunny Farms Landfill LLC is proposing a non-contiguous, lateral expansion to the south of the existing disposal area. If approved, the expansion would add 32.3 million cubic yards of space, increasing the total disposal capacity to 46.8 million cubic yards. It would extend the landfill's life about 19.2 years based on the current average daily waste receipt of 4,000 tons. The project would increase the landfill area to 261.3 acres.

The wastewater discharge permit, if approved, would allow the facility to discharge from a fourth storm water pond that would be constructed as part of the expansion. The pond would discharge to Wolf Creek, a tributary of the Sandusky River.

During the information session, Ohio EPA representatives are to present details about the proposed project. During the hearing, which follows the information session, the public can submit comments and questions for the record regarding the draft permits.

Ohio EPA is to accept written comments on the draft permits through May 16. Anyone may submit written comments or request to be on a mailing list for information by writing to: Ohio EPA Division of Materials and Waste Management, Processing and Records Management Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, OH 43216-1049.

The draft permits and other related materials are available for review at the Northwest District Office, 347 North Dunbridge Road, Bowling Green, or by calling (419) 352-8461.
