Donald F. Smith

Donald F. Smith, 87, Tiffin, died at 11:35 a.m. Saturday, May 5, 2012, at his home.

He was born Jan. 28, 1925, in Seneca County to William H. and Nina K. (Keller) Smith. He married Phyllis J. (Shellhouse) Smith Dec. 7, 1947, and she survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, LouAnn (Tony) Maraldo, rural Tiffin; a son,Curtland (Jenifer) Smith, rural Tiffin; and two grandsons, Jonathan and Jacob Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenneth Smith; and a sister, Elva Mae Detterman.

Donald was a retired quality control analyst for the former General Electric, Tiffin, for more than 40 years. After retiring, he sold Farmers Mutual Insurance for many years. He was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church, where he served as treasurer for many years. He was a 1943 graduate of McCutchenville High School. He served in the United States Marine Corp during World War II being in the second wave of marines who attacked Iwo Jima. He was a member of Tiffin AMVETS and a former member of Sycamore American Legion Post No. 250. He was a former member of Tiffin Glass Club. His hobbies were photography, going to flea markets, collecting old cameras and Tiffin glassware.

His funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Walton-Moore Funeral Home, 201 W. Saffell Ave., Sycamore, with the Rev. Donald Young officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery, Sycamore, with Sycamore American Legion Post No. 250 conducting military graveside rites.

Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, at the funeral home.
