Appreciate teachers

May 7, 2012
The Advertiser-Tribune

As the week of May 6 kicks off the observance of teacher appreciation week, I would like to extend my most genuine gratitude to those who have dedicated their lives to the education of young people around the world. This week is special because it is devoted to the honor and respect of the teachers whom we have grown to admire. We admire these individuals, not only because of their noble contributions to academics, but also as a result of their passion for inspiring, empowering, encouraging, defending and ultimately loving the students who have passed though their classrooms.

As students grow and develop into young adults, it is essential for them to understand they are supported as they take risks and make mistakes. Inside the walls of the school, much of this support comes from the ingenuity and drive of the classroom teachers and staff. Teachers today have given a new dimension to education with their understanding of the vast developmental needs of young people.

The things that educators are doing in today's classrooms are truly immeasurable. This week provides us all with an opportunity to reflect on the importance of a teacher's role in the community. I encourage you to take a moment this week to consider the teachers who have made a contribution to your life, and let them know that they are appreciated!
