FREMONT - Rupp's Comics in Fremont is one of thousands of comic book shops around the world celebrating the comic book art form Saturday. On Free Comic Book Day, more than 3.3 million comic books will be given away by participating stores, introducing as many people as possible to the world of comic books.
"The wide array of comic books being published today ensures that readers of all ages - children, teens, and adults can find something appropriate to read that will stir their imaginations," said Chris Rupp, owner of Rupp's Comics.
Free Comic Book Day is in its 11th year.
"We at Rupp's Comics want to spread the word that comic books are perfect for today's times, not just for enjoyment but also to encourage reading in those of all ages," Rupp said.
Comic books have risen to the front ranks of pop culture, many being adapted into movies and television series. This weekend also is to mark the release of the movie, "The Avengers."
"On Free Comic Book Day, there will be more than 40 comic books to choose from at Rupp's Comics," Rupp said, "and they are free; no strings attached."
Along with all of the free comic books, Rupp plans to host in-store appearances by Aspen Comics artist Alex Konat (artist of "Fathom," "Mindfield," "Heroes" and more) and IDW Publishing and "Star Wars" artist Joe Corroeny, who is to be signing and sketching all day.
