Permit fee not viewed as cash cow

April 28, 2012
The Advertiser-Tribune

During a governmental board meeting this week, an administrator suggested reducing the fee for a permit.

At a county board of health meeting Thursday, Laura Wallrabenstein, director of the Environmental Division, proposed a $226 flat permit fee for large gatherings or concerts.

Now, the fee is $350 for an event with 1,000-4,999 attendees, $450 for one with 5,000-9,999 attendees and $500 for 10,000 or more attendees.

The lower, proposed fee takes into consideration the cost of investigation the site, plus all the consultations and clerical work involved in deciding whether to grant a permit. In other words, the permit fee isn't viewed as a way to generate revenue.

That approach deserves a tip of the cap.
