Calvert sweeps meet with Spartans

Calvert's boys dominated its meet with Mansfield St. Peter, winning all but one event in a 91-26 victory at Heidelberg University.

On the girls side, the Senecas defeated the Spartans, 55-44.

For the Seneca boys, Nathan Mathias won the shot and the discus, taking the shot in 41-4 and the discus in 134-6. Teammate Mike Smith also won a pair of events, taking the long jump (16-6) and the 800 (2:23.7).

For the girls, Calvert's relay teams won all three contested events. The team of Marisa Horn, Abby Sullivan, Megan Funkhouser and Olivia Smith won the 4x400 in 4:11.7. Calvert's Liberty Ewald, Lauren Reineke, Emma Sullivan and Funkhouser won the 4x100 (57.2), while the team of Smith, Reineke, Abby Sullivan and Marisa Horn won the 4x800 (10:59.94).

TC tennis edges Willard

Columbian's tennis team picked up its 10th win of the season, edging Willard, 3-2 in Tiffin.

In singles play, the Tornadoes' Victor Keller beat Alex Hanes, 6-4, 6-2. TC's other singles' win came when Braden Kuhn beat Logan Blanchard, 6-3, 6-0.

Willard's lone singles win came when Chris Pfefferle topped Nick Gaietto, 6-4, 6-1.

In doubles play, Columbian's team of Jared Fleming and Brandon Berry beat Willard's Alex Ramos and Zach Cofer. The Flashes' Marcus Hahler and Corey Buhach defeated Mason McCool and John Obringer, 6-3, 6-3.

Columbian moved to 10-5, 5-3 in the Northern Ohio League.

Rams handle Bucyrus

UPPER SANDUSKY -Bucyrus managed just one doubles win Thursday, as Upper Sandusky knocked off the Redmen, 4-1.

In singles play, the Rams' Trevor Barth beat Matt Musick, 6-4, 6-2. Upper Sandusky's Jacob Courtright knocked off Connor Johnson, 6-1, 6-1, while the Rams' Brice Arnold defeated Alex Huff, 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles play, Upper Sandusky's team of Tyler Rice and Seth Sprang beat Seth Chorolor and Ryne Stevens, 6-2, 6-4.

The Redmen's team of Brandon Keener and Mark Musick topped Evan Scheck and Kyle Miller, 6-3, 6-3.

HU splits with Otterbein

Heidelberg and Otterbein's softball teams played a pair of tight games Thursday, splitting them.

The Student Princes won the first game, 4-2, before falling to the Cardinals in the nightcap, 4-3.

In the first game, Otterbein took a 2-0 lead, only to see Heidelberg rally when Bellevue graduate Bessie Artino singled in New Riegel grad Jamie Wagner to make it 2-1.

HU took the lead with three runs in the fifth. Erica Huffman hit an RBI triple in the inning.

Wagner and Artino combined for seven hits.

Ali Sayre allowed nine hits and struck out four in picking up the win in the circle.

In the second game, Artino hit a two-run homer, and the Student Princes built a 3-0 lead.

But the Cardinals responded with two runs each in the third and fourth to take the lead and eventually the win.

Heidelberg moved to 16-18, 6-9 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
