NEW RIEGEL - New Riegel put the first blemish on Seneca East's Midland Athletic League record as the Blue Jackets downed the Tigers, 6-1. The loss drops Seneca East (12-7, 5-1 MAL) out of a first-place tie with Lakota and into third, a half-game behind New Riegel (14-4, 6-1).
The game was scoreless until New Riegel posted a run in the fourth inning. Four more in the fifth allowed the Blue Jackets to take control of the game.
New Riegel pounded out 10 hits. Kara Scherger, Taylor Kirian and Sandra Acree each had two-hit games. Kirian drove in two and scored twice. Scherger had a triple, stole two bases, scored and had an RBI. Acree stole a base and scored a run.
Morgan Noftz and Taylor Arbogast each drove in runs. Stacey Wank and Megan Mathias each added base hits while Paige Noftz and Hailey Theis each scored runs.
Kirian picked up the win in the circle. She struck out seven in a three-hitter.
Cameil Ruffing had two hits and an RBI for the Tigers. Holly Bordner also had a base hit while Kristen Bowerman scored a run.
Bickford sacrifices Lakota into first place
FREMONT - Lakota sits as the last unbeaten team in Midland Athletic League play as the Raiders edged Fremont St. Joe, 3-2. The winning run came courtesy of an Alaina Bickford sac-fly in the top of the seventh.
Abby Durst went 2 for 3 with a double, a run scored and was the game's winning pitcher. She scattered nine hits over seven innings, striking out two. Sierra Ray went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Courtney Chalfin doubled and drove in a run.
Lakota (12-5, 6-0 MAL) broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fifth. St. Joe (9-7, 3-4) answered with single runs in the fifth and sixth.
Mohawk tallies 14 in first
SYCAMORE - Mohawk wasted little time seizing control of its Midland Athletic League contest with Bettsville. The Warriors put up 14 in the first inning en route to a 17-0 triumph.
Kasey and Clara Adelsperger each went 3 for 4. Kasey drove in four runs and scored twice while Clara had two RBIs and scored once. Sarah Runion, Ashley Cooper, Nikki Kieffer and Allison Price all added RBIs for Mohawk. Runion, Kieffer, Molli Cartwright and Dani Tyree all scored twice. Taylor McClain had two hits and crossed the plate three times.
Cooper, Charlotte Moes and Liz Runion also scored Warrior runs.
Cartwright picked up the win allowing two hits in five innings of work.
Rams hold off Bucyrus
BUCYRUS - Upper Sandusky jumped out to a 7-2 lead against Bucyrus, but had to hold off a late Redmen rally for a 7-6 North Central Conference victory.
Bucyrus scored four in the sixth to get within one run, but Upper Sandusky shut the door in the seventh thanks to turning its third double play of the game to end it.
"Our defense played excellent ball tonight behind our pitching, making a great play after another to get us out of difficult situations," Ram coach David Young said. "The bats started earlier tonight which helped keep Bucyrus on their tows and we ran the bases aggressively helping to cause a couple miscues."
Amber Cox and Brigitte Snow each doubled and scored runs for Upper Sandusky. Savannah Piecha had a base hit and scored twice.
Allie Smith picked up the win while Kelsi Kapp came on in relief to shut the door.
H-L runs past Old Fort
OLD FORT - Lauren Trumpler homered, four different Hopewell-Loudon hitters drove in two runs, and Hopewell-Loudon opened up an 8-0 lead before beating Old Fort, 17-7.
The Chieftains scored seven runs in the first inning, and scored at least once in each of the five innings. Kelsey Coppus picked up the win in the circle as the Chieftains improved to 6-12, 3-3 in the Midland Athletic League.
Kelly Miller homered for the Stockaders (1-10, 1-5).
Fast start fuels Carey
A three-run first inning helped Carey to a 5-2 Midland Athletic League win over Calvert. Ali Rymer pitched the Blue Devils (7-10, 3-3) to the win, striking out eight while allowing only six hits in a complete game performance. She also helped her own cause with a double, single and two RBIs.
Hannah Draper, Erin Boes and Audrey Hotelling also drove in runs. Makenzie Wentling had three base hits while Boes and Abby Hall each had two.
For Calvert (2-12, 1-6) Margaret Bowers had a pair of hits. Miranda Shorts and Emily Lutz each had RBIs.
Frost freezes Mohawks
NORTH BALTIMORE - North Baltimore's Jessica Frost struck out 12 of the 19 St. Wendelin batters she faced, pacing the Tigers to a 10-0, five-inning victory. Frost allowed just one hit and walked three in the complete game shutout.
At the plate, the Tigers tallied runs in every inning. Kelsey Gazarek had four hits including a triple. She drove in two runs and scored three times. Megan Wright had a pair of doubles and drove in two. Ricci Emahiser also had two RBIs. Frost and Jasmine Bretz also had RBIs. Hannah Brian had a pair of base hits.
Edy Mowrey had St. Wendelin's lone base hit.
Bulldogs batter FHS
FOSTORIA - Kelley Swope smacked a grand slam and two doubles Wednesday as Rossford walloped Fostoria 16-9 in Northern Buckeye Conference play.
Swope added another run for the Bulldogs, who led 6-0 after the top of third inning.
Margo Jackson backed her with two runs and two RBIs off a double and single, Lyndsey Skala had three runs and a double, Jessica Kulczak had three runs and two singles and Kristin Keller tallied three runs and a single.
Abby Stahl got the win.
Karl Grine drilled a solo homer and added another run for the Redmen (4-14, 2-5 NBC) and Erica Moore went 3 for 4 with a run, triple, double and two RBIs.
Ashley Goins went 3 for 3 with two doubles and three runs, and Casey Babb belted two singles and a double.
Babb suffered the loss, but only two of the eight runs she surrendered in 3 1/3 innings were earned. The Redmen committed six errors.
Cubs bounce Buckettes
NEW WASHINGTON - Lucas pounded out four runs in the fourth for a 5-0 lead en route to a 5-1 North Central Conference win Wednesday over Buckeye Central.
Makayla Stover (4-2) suffered the loss against the Cubs (10-9, 6-2 NCC).
Maddie Ehresman's run and two singles paced the Buckettes (12-7, 3-5).
