Jordan Liette struck out eight batters as Tiffin swept a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader from Hillsdale 8-5 and 2-0 on Saturday.
In game on, Hillsdale scored twice in the first inning, followed by the Dragons with a run in the second and another in the third.
Tiffin (15-22, 10-14 GLIAC) led 3-2, but the Chargers struck back in the fourth to tie it up. K.C. Weber scored in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-3 TU, but Hillsdale charged back in the fifth scoring twice to take the lead 5-4.
Pat Curtin ripped a double to left field, scoring two. Another score on a single, and a missed throw to second base allowed Curtin to score, giving the Dragons an 8-5 win over Hillsdale (9-29, 7-19).
Jordan Chiero and Helldobler had two hits each, while Curtin and Ryan Williams drove in two runs each. Greg Sombati (2-0) gave up one hit and struck out two in two innings.
For Hillsdale, Nolan Nunez and Scott Rhodes and two hits each. Colin Casey (3-3) gave up three runs, all earned, walked four and struck out one in 2 1/3 innings.
The nightcap came down to a pitching duel, as both starters went the distance. In the fourth, Curtin scored on a single, and Locke scored a run in the fifth. The Chargers threatened with two on and one out in the seventh, but Liette threw a game-ending double play.
Williams had two hits for TU while Chiero extended his hitting streak to eight games. Liette (3-5) gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out eight in seven innings.
For Hillsdale, Mike Blanchard, Brad Hayden and Rhodes had two hits each. Dan Rhodes (1-2) gave up seven hits, two runs, one earned, walked one and struck out three in seven innings.
Tiffin closes the series with Hillsdale today. The doubleheader is scheduled at noon.
Mount Union tennis drops HU
ALLIANCE - The University of Mount Union defeated Heidelberg University 6-3 Saturday in men's tennis, taking five wins in singles play and one in doubles.
The team of Zach Schwenning and Ryan Patrick Earl defeated Ben Swope and Patrick Yackmack, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles for Heidelberg.
Student Princes Dorion Kempf (Galion) and Matthew McDivitt added an 8-3 win over Purple Raiders Drew LeGrendre and Zach Nelson at No. 3 doubles.
Schwenning beat Swope 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 at No. 4 singles in Heidelberg's only singles win.
The Student Princes fell to 10-6 overall and 4-3 in the OAC, while Mount Union improved to 11-7 overall and 4-3 in the OAC. Heidelberg returns to the court Tuesday to face Otterbein University in its final regular-season contest away from Tiffin.
'Berg women blanked
Mount Union swept Heidelberg 9-0 Saturday in Ohio Athletic Conference women's tennis.
Kayla Gerber got Heidelberg's only set victory, a 7-5 win in the second set against Mary Wise at No. 2 singles.
The Student Prince host Otterbein University in the final home match of the season on Wednesday.
Lentz's 195 tops 'Berg at ONU Invite
LIMA - Heather Lentz carded a team-best 195 to lead Heidelberg University at the two-day Ohio Northern Invitational. All of the Student Princes competed in the tournament as individuals.
Lentz recorded rounds of 91 and 104. Rachel Huth (222) and Kam McNeal (281) also played for Heidelberg.
Heidelberg plays Saturday and Sunday in the OAC Championship at Foxfire Golf Club in Loxbourne.
Dragons track uses frequent flyer miles
The Tiffin University men's and women's track and field teams competed at three different meets Saturday. TU had 14 top-10 finishes and seven additions to the top-10 list.
The Dragons competed at the Kansas Relays, Larry Ellis Invitational, and All-Ohio Championships. For the men, at Kansas Relays, the 4x400 relay squad of Dominic Colvin, Jacob Buckwalter, Justin Ware and Shaun Borland placed fifth. Their time of 3:15.77 was second fastest in school history.
At the All-Ohio Championships, Zach Cernansky ran sixth in the 110 hurdles (14:92).
For the women at the Larry Ellis Invitational, Lynzi Daughenbaugh was clocked at 1:02.61. That was the fastest time in school history. Katie Gerhardt was the top finisher, placing fifth in the discus with a toss of 154'-8.
The Dragons garnered sixths from D'Wanda Ford in the long jump (17-9 1/2) and triple jump (35-1 3/4) and the 4x100 relay team of Ford, Markita Holland, Carlea Harper and Taylor Deskins (48.9).
Dragons fall to Panthers
Close matches went against Tiffin in men's tennis for a second day in the consolation round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, as Ohio Dominican beat TU 5-2.
The Dragons (13-11) will now face the University of Findlay for seventh place match.
Luiz Crvalho and Kyle Johnson picked up an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles for TU, but things turned against the Dragons at third doubles when Robbie Ball and Leonid Vladimirov fell 8-6.
Andres Torres and Brian Coffman had already lost 8-1 at second doubles to put TU in a 2-1 hole heading to singles play.
Torres picked up TU's other victory, winning 6-2, 6-4, but Johnson fell in his match 6-1, 6-4. Trailing 3-2, the Dragons then dropped two three-set matches. Ball lost 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, while Coffman fell 7-6, 1-6, 6-4.
