Nearly four centuries ago, in Galileo's time, it was believed God had centered the universe around the Earth and the Garden of Eden, but when Galileo looked through his telescope, he saw the earth actually revolved around the sun! (The Copernican theory). When he voiced this scientific truth, it trashed the pre-eminence of man's place in God's plan of creation. Ordered to Rome to be examined by the Holy Office of the Inquisition in 1633, he was charged with heresy and was made to recite and sign a formal abjuration. He died in 1642, still under house arrest, and would have been burned at the stake had he not lied and said he had not seen the truth he had seen.
