The driver involved in an accident last month that killed an Ohio American Water employee was charged Friday.
Tiffin Police Sgt. Mark Marquis said Florence Lofay, 83, of Tiffin, was charged with vehicular manslaughter, a second-degree misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and a $750 fine.
Lofay was driving a vehicle on Wall Street March 2 when her car struck Gary Cooper, 49, of Sycamore, who later died.
Lofay is to appear in court Wednesday, Marquis said.
"The charges," Marquis said, "were based on the totality of evidence. It appeared Mrs. Lofay's driving played a major part in the death of Mr. Cooper."
Marquis also said, while Cooper was not wearing reflective clothing at the time of the accident, he couldn't comment on how visible Cooper would have been to Lofay. He said there were no obstructions at the location of the accident.
The situation, Marquis said, is unfortunate.
"There is no good outcome here," he said.
