Lexie Pinkelman and Bessie Artino each homered, but the Heidelberg University softball team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader to Ohio Northern University. The Polar Bears won the first game, 7-2, and took the nightcap by a 10-4 count.
ONU (17-5, 8-0 OAC) put together a five-hit inning in the top of the third en route to a 3-0 lead. Heidelberg (12-12, 2-5 OAC) scored runs on a bases loaded walk in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth, but ONU scored once more and added three runs in the seventh to secure the win.
Melissa Lovati was 2 for 2, Pinkelman scored both of HU's runs and Erica Huffman and Artino each doubled. Ali Sayre went the distance, allowing 14 hits while striking out and walking six, but fell to 4-6.
In the second game, Heidelberg forged a tie with a two-run homer from Artino. However, four singles and a pair of walks helped the Polar Bears to a five-run fifth, jumping out with a 7-2 advantage. Undeterred, Pinkelman blasted a two-run shot in the bottom half of the fifth, but Jackie Magnola hit a two-run home of her own in the seventh and ONU added a trio of runs to squash any sign of a Student Princes comeback attempt.
Artino was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs in the second game. New Riegel graduate Jami Wagner and Bridget Moran also had multi-hit games.
Minteer shuts out ONU
ADA - Ryan Minteer pitched his first-career shutout helping Heidelberg to a sweep over Ohio Northern University in an OAC doubleheader. The Student Princes won the first game, 3-0, and also took the nightcap, 7-4.
In the first game, Heidelberg (16-11, 5-3 OAC) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a walk and a fielder's choice with bases loaded.
Ohio Northern (8-16, 2-5 OAC) threatened to score in the fourth on a two-out double, but Ricardo Lizacano's relay throw gunned down the runner at the plate. 'Berg tacked on a run after stealing third and scoring on a wild pitch in the fifth, placing the score at 3-0.
Ross Pruitt was 2 for 4 with a double and a run, while Eric Monroe and Trevor Oldham each had two hits.
Minteer, scattered four hits, striking out five without allowing a walk to improve to 2-1.
In game two, the Student Princes took a 2-0 lead by the second inning. ONU countered in the bottom half of the frame grabbing a 4-2 lead on a two-run single by Tyler Deitering, and a two-run double by Eric Yunker.
HU cut the deficit to 4-3 in the third with a single by Monroe which scored Joe Chiarappa. The plated three in the sixth to take the lead.
Steve Kisan was 3 for 5 at the plate with a double, RBI and a run scored. Pruitt and Monroe were each 2 for 5.
