What is abortion, and what are its effects?

January 25, 2012
By Ashley Mathias , The Advertiser-Tribune

Every life God grants is very special and unique in its own way. It's a special gift that should be treasured and never intentionally taken away. However, some make the choice to end the life of an innocent unborn before they're even give the chance to live it.

This decision is known as abortion, the intentional removal of an embryo before it is viable. It takes away the chances this infant has to live, grow, develop and enjoy the beautiful gift of life.

In the United States alone, there are approximately 1.37 million abortions each year. That's equal to about 3,700 lives being taken each and every day, by choice.

Almost 88 percent of these abortions take place before the end of the first trimester of the pregnancy. By this time, the embryo has specific DNA, a beating heart and a functioning brain. The development continues at a rapid pace and it is soon able to move and respond to events happening around it.

Not only is abortion hurting the unborn, it can carry a heavy impact on everyone involved, especially the mother. In addition to possible complications, it causes emotional and spiritual distress as well.

Together, we need to take action and protect these valuable human lives from the very moment of conception and speak up for the unborn.
