Superintendent to retire in June

KANSAS - June 30 is to be the retirement date for Lakota Superintendent Rebecca Heimlich. The announcement was made at Monday's board meeting.

Heimlich has served as superintendent since March 2006. Prior to her current post, she was a principal with the school district. A search for a replacement is to take place through North Point Educational Service Center.

In her report, Heimlich said the district's former buildings have been demolished. Auction dates for the properties are to be determined. She also said softball and baseball teams already are using the recently completed batting cage.

The board also conducted its organizational meeting Monday and watched as newly elected members Chris Chalfin and Barbara Lehmann were sworn in.

The board voted for Chalfin and Lehmann to serve as president and vice-president, respectively.

Regular meetings are to occur 7 p.m. the second Monday of each month with the exception of November, which is to occur at 7 p.m. the third Monday of the month. Meetings are to take place in the staff dining room at the Lakota school building.

In other news, the board voted to:

Waive the reading of minutes.

Authorize the treasurer to invest funds not needed to meet current expenditures.

Authorize board members compensation for 12 regular meetings and up to 12 special meetings at $80 per meeting.

Appropriate funds for a $20,000 position bond for board president, members, superintendent and treasurer.

Authorize the superintendent to approve student activity policies, procedures.

Authorize the superintendent to serve as purchasing agent and to dispose of equipment with less than $2,000 in value.

Accept the retirements of Librarian Joyce Koppenhofer and certified substitute Paul Mates effective Feb. 26 and Dec. 1, 2011 respectively.

Appoint Holly Jay to community weight room supervisor at $7.70 per hour.

The board also approved:

A resolution for the board of education to declare transportation by school conveyance is impractical and agrees to pay parents or guardian of said pupil in lieu of providing such service based on Ohio Department of Education's reimbursement rate.

To accept two $250 donations from Michael Phillips and Ann Dimisa and Michael Phillips to be used towards the Phillips Scholarship.

The board is to meet next at 7 p.m. Feb. 13.
