Winning designs in Seneca County awarded by the Ottawa-Sandusky-Seneca Joint Solid Waste District during its calendar design contest went to students at Calvert, Seneca East and St. Wendelin.
High school submissions were from art teachers Marla Schultz of Calvert and Anne Fry of Seneca East. Winning students were Abigail Sullivan, first place, Calvert, and Darienne Bils, second place, Seneca East.
Winning designs from middle school were submitted by Schultz of Calvert and Janealla Smalley of St. Wendelin. Middle school winners were Morgan Smith, first, Calvert, and Zach Kruszynski, second place, St. Wendelin.
Students were encouraged to create a design with a recycling or litter prevention theme to be included in a 2012 calendar to be created by OSS.
Winners received a book bag made from recycled plastic water bottles and yogurt containers and filled with a variety of art supplies. In addition, the district framed the winners original artwork in a recycled-content frame.
OSS invited students in grades 7-12 to participate. Entries were judged by the Bowling Green State University Art Department and 12 designs were selected to be displayed in the calendar, four from each county. Calendars were distributed to all schools and county offices in each of the three counties.
