Lawsuit filed over courthouse

A lawsuit has been filed against Seneca County to forestall demolition of the 1884 courthouse.

A group of taxpayers filed complaint for writ of mandamus with the Ohio Supreme Court Monday, ordering county commissioners provide a courthouse for "administration of justice in Seneca County," and honor past commitments to renovate the 1884 courthouse to achieve the request.

Commissioners had few comments as they wait to hear from County Prosecutor Derek DeVine. DeVine said Monday afternoon he is going through the paperwork and plans to discuss the case with commissioners during a meeting Tuesday morning in executive session.

In a 2-1 vote Nov. 17, commissioners approved a contract with B&B Wrecking for demolition of the building. An injunction would need to be filed in order for the project to be put on hold.

Fencing went up Monday to prepare the area for demolition as B&B Wrecking begins asbestos clean-up this week.
