The world of college sports was rocked twice last month with allegations of sexual assault of youths by those who were entrusted with caring for them. If the claims are true, the adults should be ashamed.
But what should be recognized at the same time is the vast number of coaches who sacrifice time, talent and physical and mental effort to help youngsters develop physically, psychologically and spiritually. These adults help instill the importance of teamwork and commitment in the youths in their charge, and those values extend well beyond the field of play.
Participation in team endeavors also can show youths that when everyone executes an assigned task as they should, the team can succeed.
In fact, extracurricular activities of all kinds - and we're thinking of bands, choirs and theater productions, too - can teach students how to manage their time while showing them just how much they can accomplish with their day.
These are important points for future community members to learn. For that, we thank their mentors.
