Heidelberg University is offering two weekend concerts
Trombonist and vocalist Philip Jones is the featured performer at the Jazz Ensemble's fall concert at 7 p.m. Friday in Rickly Chapel on the Heidelberg campus.
Jones and ensemble Director John Owen, who were classmates at Illinois Wesleyan University, reconnected in the summer at Owen's retirement celebration.
During three days on campus, he is to give a session for prospective students interested in studying music at Heidelberg. In addition to rehearsing with the Jazz Ensemble, Jones also will conduct a session with a faculty rhythm section comprised of Paul Mayhew on piano and Scott Kretzer on percussion.
When he meets with students, Owen said Jones will discuss jazz music and how to be an entrepreneur in the music industry. He'll also conduct a masterclass with low brass students.
The ensemble concert is free.
Pieter Grobler is to give a guest piano recital at 7 p.m. Saturday in Brenneman Music Hall on the Heidelberg campus.
A classically trained pianist and former adjunct instructor at Heidelberg, Grobler is to present selections from composers Stefans Grove, Mozart, Chopin, Liszt and Arnold van Wyk.
His recital also is free.
