Time draws short for CRP signup

April 5, 2011
The Advertiser-Tribune

The deadline for the Conservation Reserve Program general signup is April 15.

This is the second consecutive year the U.S. Department of Agriculture has offered a general CRP signup.

CRP is a voluntary program that helps agricultural producers use environmentally sensitive land for conservation benefits. Producers plant covers to control soil erosion, improve water and air quality and develop wildlife habitat. In return, they get annual rental payments and cost-share assistance.

Land not enrolled in CRP can be offered during signup if all eligibility requirements are met. CRP participants with contracts expiring this fall can make new contract offers during the sign-up period. Contracts awarded during this general signup will become effective Oct. 1.

For more information, call the Seneca County FSA office at (419) 447-7071 or visit www.fsa.usda.gov/Internet/FSA_File/crpsignupjan.pdf.
