’Berg grapplers go 3-2 to even record

LYCOMING, Pa. - Heidelberg's wrestling team went 3-2 at the Budd Whitehall Duals over the weekend.

The Student Princes opened with a 20-15 loss to No. 12 York College on Friday, then beat No. 29 Messiah College 23-18 and King's College 38-8.

A 19-18 loss to No. 28 Wabash College followed, with Heidelberg beating No. 21 Springfield 30-12.

Three Heidelberg grapplers went 5-0.

Junior Tom D'Alessandra battled back from injury to get five wins at 138 pounds, including three major decisions.

Matt Curley had four major decisions at 165 pounds to up his record to 18-1, and Andy Lovins' 5-0 mark at 197 moved him to 16-2 for the Student Princes (7-7-2).

Sean Pincura (157), Columbian graduate Dayne Williams (174), Jerry Knapp (285) and Andrew Johnson (149) all claimed three victories.

Miller, Gill leap to wins

LAKE CHARLES, La. - Pole vaulter Lee Miller and high jumper Meghan Gill each won and long jumper Kayla Ellks turned in a provisional-qualifying mark Friday for Tiffin at the Jeff Davis Bank McNeese Indoor Meet.

Miller cleared 14-6 to give the Dragons their only men's win, while Gill sailed 5-2 1/4 for the lone TU women's victory.

Ellks finished second in the women's long jump by leaping 18-2 1/2, and added a third in the triple jump (34-0).

Seconds for TU's men came from Zachary Lathrop in the 800 (1:59.59) and Travis LeFlore in the high jump (6-4).

Kira Beckham added a third in the 200 (27.3) for TU's women and Markita Holland ran third in the 100 (1:03.99).

TU splits out-of-state matches

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Tiffin went 1-1 in a rare midweek out-of-state trip Thursday, beating Newman 27-18 before falling 26-9 to Central Missouri.

Sophomore 165-pounder Johnny Merryman took over the TU lead in falls with a pair of pins. His match with Newman's Ryan Spencer went to the final seconds, while his win over Central Missouri's Russell Naylor took only 36 seconds.

Several other Dragons went 1-1.

Trevor Nickolai pinned Newman's Dakota Hayes (1:09), but fell 10-1 to Scott Neuman of Central Missouri.

Nathan Strickland split a pair of 197-pound matches, beating Newman's Jacob Cole 3-2 and falling 4-0 to Central Missouri's Doug Thompson.

Joe Miller lost 6-1 to Newman 184-pounder Tyler Hassenbark and beat Central Missouri's Travis Miller 5-2.

Jordan Duckett (133) and Kyle Begg (149) both had forfeit wins, but fell by decision against Central Missouri foes.
