Pioneer Days return to Lyme Village

August 31, 2010
The Advertiser-Tribune

BELLEVUE Historic Lyme Village is celebrating Pioneer Days 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 11-12.

Located at 5001 SR 4, east of Bellevue, the village depicts life in the Firelands in the 1800s. More than 150 reenactors, artisans, sutlers and musicians are to educate visitors about life in Ohio and United States in the 1700s and 1800s.

Crafters include a basket maker, blacksmith, broom maker, chair caner, quilter, spinner and wood worker, who will display their tools and demonstrate their arts. Sutlers will have trade blankets lined with their wares on the lawn. Beeker's General Store and the Village Gift Shop also will have items for sale.

Richland County Museum members are to cook on the hearth in the Schriner Log House. Food is to be available for purchase at the Carriage House Cafe, Scarlett's Tavern. Rick Fredericks will have homemade ice cream for sale, and the Daughters of Union Veterans are to sell Civil War fry bread.

Visit the camps of Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers. Converse with Abe Lincoln, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and "Stonewall" Jackson. A Civil War skirmish is slated at 4 p.m. both days. The 1882 Wright Mansion, once a stop on the Underground Railroad, is to be open for tours by the Victorian Guild. A fee of $2 benefits the mansion's restoration fund.

Younger guests can do quill pen writing, tin-tapping, weaving and other activities. Volunteers will conduct one-room school sessions and storytelling, and children can try old-fashioned games such as stilts and hoop rolling.

The Country Crossroad Cloggers are to dance in the shelter, and The Lyme Village Pioneers are to provide vocal music, under the direction of the Rev. Edgar Shelly.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children age 6-12. Children ages 5 and younger are free. For more information, visit or call (419) 483-4949.
