Residents worried by new sewer rates

August 7, 2010

NEW RIEGEL Nine community members attended the public meeting for discussion of two ordinances regarding sewer fees at a special meeting of the New Riegel Village Council this week.

Second readings were heard for ordinances setting the sewer debt repayment fee in addition to usage fees for residences and businesses inside village limits at $30 monthly and $45 for those outside village limits and setting an annual 3 percent surcharge to allow for rate increases and maintenance starting in January 2012 for a three-year period.

Josh Eagleston from the USDA/Rural Development was present to answer any questions. Residents wanted to know why a raise in fees was required and what the surcharge is needed for. Several expressed concern for those on fixed incomes in the community.

Any questions dealing with the failure of the American Sweet Bean Company to purchase the Farmland Foods facility are to be addressed at council's next scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. Aug. 17.
