Matchsticks to Miracles expanding

August 2, 2010
By Jessica Huffman, Correspondent

Matchsticks to Miracles furniture store has opened an expansion, which houses a workshop with a spraying room and a repair and restoration area.

Owners Michael and Melinda Musgrave opened the used furniture store June 4, 2009. Originally, the location only included the lower level that served both as the workshop and store area.

The Musgraves have both old furniture, some of which has been repaired or restored, and new furniture. They are licensed sanitizers and all of the furniture has been spray sanitized.

"A lot of the stuff is really good furniture," Michael said.

Matchsticks to Miracles is a family business. The couple's two sons, John and Marty, and 4-year-old daughter, Miya, work in the store.

"Miya loves to dust," he said. "John does the sanding upstairs."

Melinda does some of the repair and restoration work on furniture as well. She has her own section of the store area as her designated workshop. Marty works in the store area and with customers.

"We have everything from A to Z," he said.

They have beds, bed frames, desks, mirrors, and chairs and tables of all kinds, just to name a few items.

The couple opened the store because they were experiencing trouble finding work and needed to create their own income. Since the business opened last year, the couple has had great success.

"The business seems to be thriving because people need to make due," he said. "We try to be fair and that's making the business go."

The Musgraves recently have begun selling items at flea markets as well. They work with the Salvation Army, WSOS, Bridges and agencies that help low-income people to provide people with furniture.

"We have had a great response from the community," Melinda said.

The couple enjoys the business and is excited about its future. The store room is packed and, according to the couple, turnover is steady.

"Being my own boss is the best part," Michael said. "Restoration is my favorite. I like seeing the finished product."

They recently have introduced monthly raffles.

Matchsticks to Miracles, 164 E. Perry St., is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.
