FREMONT - Terra Community College is offering free Microsoft Office testing vouchers as part of a partnership between the University System of Ohio and Microsoft.

The program, called "Elevate America," provides a variety of resources to individuals seeking skills and job resources. The test vouchers can be used to become certified in Microsoft's Office applications, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook.

The vouchers must be used by Aug. 26.

FINDLAY - Area youth ages 10 through 14 can explore science, mathematics and creative thinking through the use of LEGO materials as the Owens Community College Findlay-area campus offers its summer LEGO Robotics Academy Program July 19-22.

The program is to be offered through Owens' Workforce and Community Services and is to take place in the Community Education and Wellness Center room 124. Two separate classes are to be available as part of the program and are to take place 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday.

FINDLAY Owens Community College's Alumni Association again is organizing a gently used backpack drive.

The community service endeavor, titled "Backpack to the Future," is accepting gently used or new backpacks and new school supplies from area residents during the summer months. Items collected, as part of the "Backpack to the Future" program, are to be given to low-income elementary school children throughout northwest Ohio.

In addition to the backpacks, individuals can donate crayons, markers, bottles of glue, glue sticks, colored pencils, pencils, pink erasers, school boxes, pocket folders, marbled covered composition books and Kleenex tissues. Area residents can bring their charitable donations to the Office of Alumni Relations on the Toledo-area campus in Perrysburg Township and to the Student Development Office on the Findlay-area campus.

The Teen Department at Tiffin-Seneca Public Library continues its summer reading program, "Make Waves at Your Library," with a program July 20.

The event, "Bubble Mania," is to be 2:30-3:30 p.m. in Junior Home Room. Participants can come during the hour to learn how to make homemade bubble solution and wands. All participants are to receive a small bottle of bubbles and the recipe to take home. The program is open to students entering sixth grade through grade 12 and is free. No registration is required.

Tiffin-Seneca Public Library is to host a "Popcorn Movie" as part of the Junior Library's summer reading program, "Make a Splash READ!"

Summer reading program participants can view the "Flipper and the Elephant" episode of the series Flipper at 2 p.m. July 20 in Frost Kalnow Room. It is for all ages, and no registration is required.

Tiffin-Seneca Public Library is having adult computer classes in August and September. Nine classes are to be offered, but space is limited so registration is necessary. Registration is under way. The library charges $1 per class to cover copy costs, which must be paid by the time of the class.

The "Beginning Internet" class is to be 10-11:30 a.m. Aug. 16 and is for those who are just learning about the Internet. Students are to learn the buttons and pull-down menus of Microsoft Internet Explorer, as well as use their newly learned skills to navigate on the OPLIN homepage, the OPLIN databases and T-SPL's website.

"Mouse 101" is to be presented 10:30-11:30 a.m. Aug. 18 and is to teach students how to use the mouse. Students are to distinguish between left and right clicking, double clicking and moving the mouse.

"Searching the Internet" is to be taught 10-11:30 a.m. Aug. 24. To take this class, students should have taken the Beginning Internet class. Students are to learn how to search the Internet, in addition to learning about different types of search engines and directories, and how to formulate good searches. Students must be familiar with how to use a mouse.

"Beginning Excel" is to be offered 10-11:30 a.m. Aug. 31 for students interested in learning the spreadsheet program. Students are to learn how to set up an address book and create a simple checkbook.

"Basic Computing" is to be taught 10-11:30 a.m. Sept. 8. Basic Computing is designed for users who are just learning to use a computer. Students are to learn the basic parts of the computer and the keyboard, as well as using the start button and navigating the desktop. Knowledge of how to use the mouse is helpful.

"Intermediate Excel" is to be taught 10-11:30 a.m. Sept. 14. Students in the class are to review the fundamentals of Excel, work with formulas and become familiar with sorting and organizing data. Students should have a basic knowledge of Excel before taking the intermediate course.

"Beginning Word" is to be taught 10-11:30 a.m. Sept. 15. Students are to learn the basics of word processing using Microsoft Word, including how to create and save documents, how to use basic Word functions and how to customize a document. Knowledge of how to use the mouse is helpful.

"E-Mail" is to be taught 10-11:30 a.m. Sept. 21. The class shows students the different sites that offer free e-mail accounts and walks them through setting up an account. Students should be familiar with the Internet and know how to use the mouse.

"Intermediate Word" is to be presented 10-11:30 a.m. Sept. 22. Students in the Intermediate Word class are to review the fundamentals of Word as well as learn about templates, formatting and working with graphics in a Word document.

FOSTORIA - The "Who Do You Think You Are?" series of free genealogy classes is 6 p.m. Monday at Kaubisch Memorial Public Library. The second class is 6 p.m. Aug. 16. The classes are to be in McClean Room. To register, visit the circulation desk or call (419) 435-2813.

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is seeking local families to host boys and girls between the ages of 15 to 18 from a variety of countries around the world. Bridges Community Academy's board meetings are 6:15 p.m. Aug. 11, Sept. 8, Oct. 13, Nov. 10, Dec. 8, Jan. 12, Feb. 9, March 16, April 13, May 11 and June 8.

Girl Scouts of North East Ohio and Franciscan Earth Literacy Center of Tiffin, through a grant from Tiffin Charitable Foundation, is to host the Go Green environmental awareness/technology program at FELC this summer.

The program is for all levels of Girl Scouts.

Daisies/Brownies are to meet for three sessions: 6-8 p.m. July 26, Aug. 2 and Aug. 9. Juniors are to meet for three sessions: 6-8 p.m. July 28, Aug. 4 and Aug. 11. C/S/A is to meet three sessions on Sundays and two work sessions. The two-hour sessions are 6-8 p.m. today, July 25 and Aug. 8, and the two four-hour sessions are to be 4-8 p.m. Aug. 22 and Sept. 5.

The final event is 2-4 p.m. Sept. 25. It is to be an open house and a showing of the completion of the program that is open to the public.

The older girls are to be building models of alternative energy sources and constructing a rain garden by the new Zero Energy building being constructed at FELC. They are to have an opportunity to meet with specialists from different agencies related to alternative energies, master gardeners and others.

MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. Kohl's Department Stores is having a contest to give half a million dollars to 20 schools each this year, a total of $10 million, in recognition of the company's 10th anniversary of its Kohl's Cares philanthropic program that supports children's health and education.

According to a release, Kohl's wants to inspire students and school supporters to dream big about what their favorite K-12 school could do with half a million dollars - whether it's starting an art program, creating a new computer lab or saving a music program. Through Sept. 3, people can visit www.facebook.com/kohls to report what their school could do with the funding, cast their votes, get more information and view the official rules.

GAHANNA AEP Ohio, a unit of American Electric Power, in conjunction with the Ohio Energy Project, Ohio Fuel Cell Corridor, Ohio Rural Electric Cooperatives, Ohio Propane Education and Research Council, Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, Honda of America, AEP Foundation, the Teaching and Learning Collaborative and Columbus State Community College, is sponsoring four Ohio-based workshops for teachers.

Course topics cover energy, economics and the environment. Workshops include Sources of Energy Tour Tuesday through Thursday, plus Bright Start Right Start July 27-30, both in Columbus.

Many AEP-sponsored workshops offer graduate credit, ranging from one to three hours. Class sizes range from 12 to 30 teachers, with first priority given to educators living and teaching within AEP's 11-state service territory.
