CASA of Seneca, Sandusky and Wyandot Counties and The Advertiser-Tribune are offering parenting tips throughout the month of April to promote healthy families. April is National Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month. It is our hope these articles will help parents build stronger relationships with their children.
Parents are responsible for making sure their child is well cared for and safe. There are times when a parent can't be with a child, therefore it is important to choose responsible people to care for him or her.
Set clear rules for behavior, monitor your child's behavior and give him or her feedback. Use effective discipline to help children develop self-control. Different parenting techniques work for different children under different circumstances.
Some ways to take good care of your child/children are to:
Be a parent who monitors your child's television, Internet, video and video game use.
Be a parent who makes sure your child eats nutritious foods.
Be a parent who makes sure your child receives good medical care.
Be a parent who makes sure your child develops good sleep habits.
Be a parent who is at home when your child is home.
Be a parent who carefully chooses your child's caregiver when you can't be with them.
Be a parent who uses nonphysical options for discipline.
Be a parent who sets basic rules and limits.
Some of these tips may seem obvious, yet sometimes we need a reminder that some of the simplest things we do or say to our child may be the most important. Our children are our future. Handle them with care.
