George Washington sighted in New Riegel

By Bonnie Daniel, Correspondent
POSTED: March 10, 2010

NEW RIEGEL - New Riegel Local Schools' media center now displays a large picture of George Washington and a flag flown over Mount Vernon presented to the board of education last month by teacher Bethany Brickner following her experience last summer at the George Washington Teachers' Institute.

Right to Read Week, titled "Score with Reading" is in progress and culminates Friday with an assembly featuring Jim "Basketball" Jones. Students are to receive awards for their achievement during the summer reading program.

High school students receiving a National Machinery Award also will be participating in a breakfast Friday morning.

Principal David Rombach announced several upcoming events:

n The school pep band will play at the School of Opportunity All Star Game March 18 at Seiberling Gymnasium.

n March 20, the spring Jacket Co. dinner and show starts serving at 6:30 p.m. with the performance beginning at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $15 for both.

n Senior recognitions take place at Seneca East High School March 22.

n The High School Art Show is March 26 at Mohawk High School.

n The Boy Scouts are sponsoring an empowered leadership day for 50-60 students involved in student council and leadership groups at Tiffin University May 3.

Board members granted approval to Superintendent Elaine Nye to proceed in signing an agreement with the Red Cross designating the school facility as a disaster evacuation site.

She also led a discussion on the continuation of family and consumer science class, utilizing a 3/8 teacher from Sentinel. The cost and few interested students helped the board determine to not continue the classes at this time. It was felt current business and health curricula would cover several of the topics in the family and consumer class.

In other matters, the board:

n Heard the district used only four calamity days this year.

n Accepted the amounts and rates as determined by the budget commission and to authorize the necessary levies and certify them to the county auditor.

n Hired Sarah Gosche as SADD adviser and art coordinator for the remainder of the school year with compensation set at one-half pay for the position.

n Approved Cindy Downey and Dave Stevens as volunteer track coaches.

n Accepted a $1,000 grant from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation and established a fund for the grant money.

n Amended the 2010 appropriations.

n Transferred $514 from defunct funds to the general fund.

The board meets next at 7 p.m. April 12 in the media center.
