Celebrate safely and sanely this New Year’s Eve

December 30, 2009
The Advertiser-Tribune

The holidays are a time for merriment - sometimes of a nature that is regretted after the holidays are over.

New Year's Eve is a day away, but many celebrations will begin today. Too often, office parties and get-togethers with friends and co-workers involve too much consumption of alcoholic beverages.

That is never a good idea, of course - but driving after having had too much to drink can result in tragedy.

During the holidays, then, we suggest celebration in moderation. We urge those who do over-indulge in alcoholic beverages to find some way home other than driving. Friends and family members - or perhaps a co-worker who volunteers to be a designated driver - usually are happy to provide a lift. Bars and restaurants will call cabs, if asked.

Drinking and driving never is unavoidable - and never acceptable. At the very least, it can cost offenders their driver's licenses. At worst, it can cost them their lives.

Enjoy the holidays, but do it safely and responsibly. Your friends and family want you with them next year.
