Kelbley, push in 3rd boost Blue Jackets

GIRLS BASKETBALL

POSTED: November 28, 2009

NEW RIEGEL - Paula Kelbley netted eight of her game-high 16 points in a key third quarter Friday and added four assists and four steals to spark New Riegel's 48-40 season-opening win over Colonel Crawford.

The Blue Jackets took control in the third quarter, outscoring Colonel Crawford 18-12 to turn a 21-19 halftime lead into a 39-31 advantage heading into the final period.

"We had an excellent third quarter that gave us some cushion," New Riegel coach Steve Lucius said. "It was a very nice win, as Colonel Crawford has a lot of tall kids and we have a bunch of kids that have not played much at the varsity level and are still learning."

Taylor Mathias backed up Kelbley with 12 points, Jami Wagner scored eight points and Holly Metzger hauled down six rebounds.

Krista Horning's 12 points keyed the Eagles. Natalie Huggins scored 10 points, and Nickyla Garverick grabbed seven boards.

Krebs-led Royals thump Rams

UPPER SANDUSKY - Teneil Krebs nearly tallied a double-double and Wynford let just one Upper Sandusky player score more than eight points Friday as the Royals rolled up a 64-36 victory.

Emily Caudill's 12 points and five steals topped the Rams. Shayleen Wood chipped in eight points and four rebounds and Emily England scored seven points.

Buckettes buck up in fourth period

ATTICA - Buckeye Central started the fourth quarter up by seven and finished with the same margin, but it was all tied up 50-50 with two minutes to go before the Buckettes pulled away from Seneca East in the 57-50 season opener.

Melissa Hoffbauer carried the Buckettes (1-0) with 20 points, shooting 8 of 14 from the line, and grabbed 14 rebounds. Karla Maul also drained a three and contributed 12 points while Shelbi Heydinger netted six more.

Seneca East's Ashton Daniel canned three 3's on her way to 21 points. Daniel also nabbed eight boards while teammate Erica Cramer shot 9 of 10 from the line to back her with 18 points.

Blue Devils too much for Redmen

BUCYRUS - Carey opened their season with a 57-33 victory over Bucyrus.

The Blue Devils used Lauren Jacoby's nine rebounds and 12 points and nine rebounds to lead the way to an easy win. Morgan Draper netted 13 points while Emily Hall and Brye Johnson nabbed three steals each. Johnson also scored 10 points for Carey.

Sarah Davis was the high scorer for Bucyrus with 10 points.

Geroski, Rutter outscore Vanlue

VANLUE - Lauren Geroski and Chelcie Rutter combined for 37 points together, each scoring more than the entire Vanlue team, as St. Wendelin breezed to a 72-16 win in the season opener.

Rutter connected on four 3's for 18 points, while Geroski knocked down eight shots from the field, two of them 3 pointers, for 19 points.

Cassi Papenfus grabbed nine rebounds, while Geroski and Alisha Weis dished out four assists each for the Mohawks (1-0). Rutter also yanked away five steals, while Katelyn Schiefer nabbed four.

Raiders ride early dominance

KANSAS - Lakota raced to a 16-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and coasted from there Friday in an 81-17 season-opening non-conference win over fellow Midland Athletic League team Bettsville.

Warriors' lead falls fast

Mohawk ended the first period up 20-9 but Northmor caught up when the Warriors only produced 12 points over the second and third periods.
