Thanksgiving is a time to observe tradition. A group of local musicians has initiated an event they hope will be around for awhile.
The second Thanksgiving for the Troops is scheduled for Wednesday 6 p.m.-1 a.m. at the Tiffin Eagles. Contributions from the event are to be deposited in the Seneca County Support the Troops Fund at Tiffin Charitable Foundation.
The gathering is to feature food prepared by Tiffin Eagles, a cash bar, games, prizes and live music by three local bands - The Late Show, Booze Brothers and Rusty Vinyl. Music starts at 8 p.m. Tony Paulus of Rusty Vinyl is a founder of the fund and the fundraiser.
"The first year, we bought phone cards and other items and sent them to the troops. After we went to this foundation, it became an emergency fund for any active troops from Seneca County," Paulus said.
Seneca County residents in any branch of the military can request financial assistance for travel expenses, utility payments for their families or other urgent needs. Paulus said members of the military should make initial contact with First Call for Help in Tiffin. The staff there then relays the request to Tiffin Charitable Foundation. With contributions over the past three years, the fund is approaching $15,000, Paulus said.
"We want people to send donations to Seneca County Support the Troops Fund," Paulus said. "They can bring check or cash to the event and we'll take care of it."
A donation of $10 or more is requestedfor admission. Tickets are available in advance at the Eagles, 68 Riverside Drive; Sports Cuts, 130 S. Washington St.; or TPC Food Service, 265 Sixth Ave. Checks should be made out to Seneca County Support the Troops Fund.
Those who cannot attend the dance can mail contributions to Tiffin Charitable Foundation, 68 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883.
