MAL girls play it close at preview
NEW RIEGEL - Close matchups dominated the night Saturday as four of the six contests at the Midland Athletic League Girls Preview were decided by three or less points.
Carey edged St. Wendelin 22-21, Old Fort nosed out St. Joe, 22-21, Lakota nipped Mohawk, 17-16, and Calvert clipped Seneca East, 18-15.
In the other two contests, North Baltimore opened the night by dropping Bettsville 36-9 in two quarters of play, followed by New Riegel downing Hopewell-Loudon, 29-14.
Brittany Tellez and Ariel Cohen both netted eight points for North Baltimore. Bettsville's Kendra Kosta scored seven points.
New Riegel took a balanced approach in its two quarters with H-L, getting five points each from Brooke Scherger and Taylor Mathias, and four apiece from Holly Metzger and Amber Mathias. Amy Wank, Paula Kelbley and Stacey Wank all scored three. Adrienne Hohman's 11 points sparked the Chieftains.
Emily Hall scored all seven of her points in the second quarter to guide Carey past St. Wendelin. Clare Berry and Katelynn Schiefer both tossed in four points for the Mohawks.
Old Fort got seven points from Hailey Koebel and six from Brittany Adelsperger. Jessica Molyet scored five points for St. Joe and Taylor Flick and Courtney Stierwalt each added four.
Amy Gosche and Jessica Hoffman paced Lakota with four points apiece. Mohawk's Lynsey Trusty, Sarah Runion and Kalli Luhring each tossed in three points.
Calvert's McKenzie Ball netted four points and Brittany Perry and Alexa Frank each had three. Seneca East's Ashton Daniel dropped in eight points.
