A trio of Columbian seniors in Division III, plus two seniors each from Hopewell-Loudon and Carey in Division VI, rated first team Thursday when the All-Northwest District teams were released.

Receiver Derek Kneeskern, defensive end Cody Krupp and linebacker Trey Tyree, all three-year starters for the Tornadoes, were among the top honorees in Division III. Hopewell-Loudon's Aaron Kapelka (end) and Hudson Smith (linebacker) were named to the first-team defense, as was Carey's cornerback Trevor Phoenix. The Blue Devils' Cy Strahm (receiver, cornerback, kicker, return man) was named the top utility player, and Jared Case was a first-team offensive lineman.

Kneeskern, an All-Ohio honoree last season who is receiving interest from Division I colleges, led the Tornadoes with 36 catches for 665 yards and a Northern Ohio League-best eight touchdowns. He also started at cornerback, handled all kicking duties and returned two kickoffs and a punt for touchdowns.

Krupp racked up 58 tackles and league-high 12 sacks despite missing a couple games due to injury. He is Columbian's career sack leader. He and Tyree (112 tackles) helped lead a defense that allowed just 16.7 points and 245 yards per game, and just 8.6 games in NOL contests.

Also for Columbian, offensive lineman Kyle Saxton and safety Jesse Hernandez made the second team in Division III.

Strahm was named the Midland Athletic League Special Teams Player of the Year earlier this month. He matched Kneeskern by returning two kickoffs and a punt for touchdowns, averaging 29 yards per kick return and 17.9 on punts. On defense he had 37 tackles and five interceptions, and on offense he led the wishbone Blue Devils with 11 receptions for 222 yards.

Phoenix was first-team district and honorable mention Ohio last season. This year he made 38 tackles and snared four interceptions to help the Blue Devils go 9-1. On offense, he rushed for 810 yards and 13 touchdowns. Case, a three-year starter at center, led an offensive line that paved the way for 295 rushing yards per game this season. Phoenix finished with more than 1,000 yards in 12 games, and Logan Norden topped 1,000 in 10 games.

Kapelka, a second-team district honoree at running back, made 89 tackles, with 12 of his 21 tackles for loss coming on sacks. On offense he was Hopewell-Loudon's second-leading rusher with 937 yards. Smith, who was the state's co-defensive player of the year last year had 91 tackles (40 solo), including six sacks and seven more tackles for loss.

Second-team players in Division VI in Carey defensive lineman Trae Cusac; running back Dillon Kwiat, receiver Adam Zahner and linebacker Jeff Stover from Calvert; Hopewell-Loudon running back Matt Brickner; and utility player Cody Kidwell, defensive tackle Kole Young and defensive back Tyler Crapo from Seneca East

Second-team honorees in Division V included Lakota's Jeremy Robbins at running back and Roger Guerra at defensive back.

A total of 27 area players got honorable mention.

Also from area leagues, Bellevue quarterback Curtis Watson was named co-offensive player of the year in Division III, and Galion's Chris Hawkins got coach of the year in Division IV. In Division VI, Wynford quarterback Tyler Brause was co-offensive player of the year, while Royals teammate tight end/defensive tackle Teven Eatmon got co-lineman of the year.

The Northwest District Board consists of media representatives from Celina, Defiance, Findlay, Fremont, Lima, Mansfield, Sandusky, Tiffin and Toledo.
