Fostoria hospital offers screenings

Fostoria Community Hospital's ProMedica Total Wellness department is to offer heart screenings 6-9 a.m. Thursday in Conference Center A on the hospital's lower level, entrance two.

The screenings are to consist of free blood pressure and blood sugar checks. Cholesterol screenings are to be offered for $5; cholesterol with HDL would cost $10; and a coronary risk profile, which includes cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol plus triglycerides, would cost $15. Individuals should not eat 12 hours before the screening to receive the most accurate results.

Owens campuses noting Sept. 11

PERRYSBURG TOWNSHIP - Owens Community College's Student Government is enabling fellow students and employees and area residents to join them on the Toledo area and Findlay area campuses and pay tribute to people who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 terror attacks eight years ago by participating in a series of free community events Friday.

On the Findlay area campus, people are to gather outside the Education Center at the flagpole to observe a moment of silence in honor of the victims at 8 a.m. A video tribute is to air throughout the day in the commons area.

ABLE program taking students

Sentinel Career Center's Adult Basic and Literacy Education program is enrolling new students for 2009-10. Orientation is to take place at 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. today in room 244.

Due to funding through a grant, ABLE classes are offered free to participants age 18 and older. Classes in reading, writing and math are available for those individuals wanting to improve basic skills for the purpose of understanding materials related to the home, work place or community. For those wanting to obtain a GED certificate, classes are offered that prepare students for all components of the General Educational Development Tests and provide test-taking tips.

Classes are offered mornings, afternoons and evenings. For those students with alternative scheduling needs or those who want additional study time at home, a distance education program is available that offers online lessons.

To enroll in classes, students are required to complete the orientation process at which time registration is to take place along with placement testing. All students, new or returning, must attend a mandatory orientation session before beginning ABLE/GED classes.

Students should plan to stay for the entire 2 1/2-hour session. Classes begin Monday. Subsequent orientations are to be offered at 12:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month or 5:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month.

Classes are 12:30-3 p.m. Monday and Wednesday; 9-11:30 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday; and 5:30-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Free transportation is available through a donation from the Tiffin Altrusa Club.

Middle School hosting open house

Tiffin Middle School is to have an open house at 7 p.m. Tuesday. It provides an opportunity for parents to follow their child's daily schedule and meet their teachers.

Students are neither required nor expected to attend.

Enclosed with the September newsletter that was mailed home is a pull-out sheet explaining open house procedures. Parents should ask their child to fill in the chart with their schedule and bring it with them to the open house.

H-L to induct 2 into Hall of Fame

BASCOM - The 2009 members of the Hopewell-Loudon Hall of Fame are Elizabeth Beisner and Dorothy Roush. The induction ceremony to honor them is to take place at 7 p.m. Friday at Chieftain Stadium, prior to the Hopewell-Loudon varsity football game against Northwood.

The public may attend.

St. Wendelin CCD classes to begin

FOSTORIA - Religious education classes at St. Wendelin Catholic Church for students attending public school are to begin today from 6:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. for grades 1-8.

Families that are new to the program or have a child entering the first grade are asked to pre-register at the religious education office by calling (419) 435-6681.

All parents are asked to accompany their children for the first session.

Tea party planned at Fremont airport

FREMONT - A drive-in/fly-in tea party is set for Saturday at Fremont Progress Airport, 365 S. SR 53, Fremont.

It is to start with music at 10:30 a.m. and a program at 11 a.m. Registration is to begin at 10:30 a.m., with pocket copies of the U.S. Constitution being given to the first 350 families.

Ohio's 5th U.S. District representative, Bob Latta, is to discuss "cap-and-trade" legislation and health care. Also, Dock Treece from Treece Investments is to discuss the economic circumstances facing our nation as well as answer questions. Other speakers are to discuss the Second Amendment and health care.

Free hot dogs and iced tea are to be available as well as drawings for American flags.

Volunteers needed to organize benefit

A meeting for anyone interested in planning next year's July 4 children's benefit at Walnut Grove Campground is set for noon Saturday at the campground. This is earlier than the time previously announced.

Committee members Bob and Shelly Smith also are selling T-shirts remaining from the 2009 event.

CASA schedules kids fundraiser

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Seneca, Sandusky and Wyandot Counties is inviting the public to Connecting With Kids, its annual fundraising event. The doors are to open at 5 p.m. Sept. 15 at Tiffin AMVETS, 1909 S. SR 100.

The main attraction is the hat raffle, which begins at 7 p.m. Individuals buy envelopes with numbered tickets in them and then place the tickets in the bag or "hat" next to the item they hope to win.

Presale tickets are available now for $8 at the CASA office, 21 Court St., or by calling (419) 448-1442. Admission at the door is $10 for adults and $3 for children ages 5-12. A light meal is included. All proceeds benefit CASA, a non-profit organization that speaks on behalf of abused, neglected and dependent children in juvenile court.

Community band recruiting players

FOSTORIA - The Fostoria Community Band is inviting local musicians to join its ranks. This volunteer organization is to have its first rehearsal for the 2009-10 season at 7 p.m. Sept. 17 in the Fostoria Middle School band room, located on the north side of the building.

Practices take place 7-9 p.m. most Thursday evenings from the middle of September until June.

The band is made up of about 40 members ranging in age from high school students to senior citizens. Their skill levels range from moderate to advanced. The members come from Fostoria and the surrounding area. Directing the band is Jarrod Koskoski, instrumental music teacher at Toledo Christian Schools.

The band is to perform at a winter holiday concert sponsored by the Fostoria Community Arts Council, a spring concert, Fostoria's Memorial Day program, and several summer concerts in the surrounding area.

Musicians interested in joining the Fostoria Community Band should bring their instruments to the Fostoria Middle School band room and be ready to enjoy making music with other music lovers.
