TU planning open house

Tiffin University is to host an open house at its new student living learning community located at 355 Miami St. 4-6 p.m. Tuesday. The ribbon-cutting, which honors developer-philanthropist Frank Murphy, is to take place at 4 p.m. The community can attend.

The new student apartment complex was once home to the Rosenblatt scrapyard. The apartment buildings and a parking lot, developed for juniors and seniors, soon are to face a new recreation center that are to be constructed on the north side of Miami Street.

Frank Murphy chose Bedway Development Corp. from Belmont County to construct the apartments. Bedway asked local suppliers to bid on the project and selected some local contractors and suppliers to participate in the apartment project. Shaferly Construction in Alvada did the project's site work.

Each building has 12 units with five single bedrooms each, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room. Also included are two multi-purpose rooms in the community, which are to serve as classrooms.

Remediation on the north side of Miami Street already has begun and is to be followed by construction of the recreation center. The improvement is a continuation of the spirit of the Miami Street Improvement Project.

Two additional apartment buildings are to be built on the south side of Miami Street in the future.

TU?offering new degree

Tiffin University is to offer a bachelor's in professional studies degree beginning in the fall semester.

The professional studies program is designed for students who already have earned an associate's degree in a technical or professional field. Students in the major develop their own program to complement their approved technical occupational degree.

"The new major will be taught at our main campus and through our accelerated degree completion program in both a seated and online format," said Charles Christensen, vice president for Academic Affairs and dean of faculty. "The professional studies program is specifically for students who wish to continue their education with a bachelor's degree that is designed around their curriculum. Students pick the upper level courses they wish to include in their major from an array of 18 courses offered as part of the program."

The program is completed during four semesters with the courses offered in a modular sequence, said Nancy Sullivan, dean of Degree Completion and Associate's Degree Programs.

"Upon admission to the professional studies program, the student chooses six of the major courses from the 18 offered," she said. "To complete the degree, the student must earn a total of 54 credit hours in the major. Tiffin University will accept 30 hours of approved transfer credit hours from the student's transfer institution."

More information about enrolling in TU's new degree program is available by contacting Kristin Payne at (800) YOU-OHIO, ext. 3172.
