BETTSVILLE - Bettsville Local Schools is ready for the new school year, the board of education learned Monday evening. Superintendent Paul Orshoski said all positions are filled and scheduled for the upcoming year.
The board discussed and made minor changes to the student handbook Monday. The board voted to remove the "no shorts" clause for students, and students no longer are permitted to call out or leave the school for lunch.
In addition, energy drinks will not be permitted. Board members said research shows energy drinks are not a healthy option for students.
Athletic Director/Assistant Principal Michelle Dantuano said the only change to the athletic handbook involves the number of players allowed to letter in golf.
Dantuano also addressed concerns from last month's board meeting on the cost to send students to recent shootouts. The school paid upfront to send the students, she said, but has been reimbursed those expenses.
The board stressed the school's participation in shootouts is new, and associated costs always will be the responsibility of participating students.
Board members approved salary changes for personnel who will be adding study halls periods due to a recent resignation, as well as employment of Diana Palos and Shelley Murphy as seventh- and eighth-grade volleyball coaches, contingent upon participation and state and federal background checks.
Board member Marc Liggett said a clean-up of the ditch near the school playground has been completed, but the fire department may conduct a controlled burn of the ditch to help weeds stay low and keep the ditch more manageable.
Also, board member Kelly Tiell said a number of 1973 Bettsville graduates have been asking about the whereabouts of a time capsule the class buried. Board members are to look further into where it might be located.
The board also:
* Approved Paul Harrison as transportation coordinator, repair person and driver for trips; Nanette Dotts as bus driver and driver for trips; and Kelly Krotzer as junior varsity volleyball coach.
* Accepted lunchroom bids for dairy and bread products. Bids were awarded to Toft's Dairy and Nickles Bakery.
* Approved Tim Lynch as volunteer to run the clock at games and Barb DeVanna and Pat Kimmet as ticket takers.
* Accepted Gregory Hendrix and Elisha Ramirez as volunteers for the summer migrant program.
