Catherine A. Steyer, 89, of Tiffin, died Thursday afternoon, June 11, 2009, at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo.
She was born Jan. 30, 1920, in Tiffin, to Frank Sr. and Georgietta (Gibson) Kleinhenz. On June 27, 1942, she married Louis E. Steyer Jr. in St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Louis; six sons, Jim (Kathy) Steyer of Greenville, George (Jody) Steyer of Medina, Tom (Adelaida) Steyer of Tiffin, Mike Steyer of Tiffin, Joe (Laurie) Steyer of Bowling Green and Dan (Kelly) Steyer of Toledo; six daughters, Mary Ann (Fred) Alaniz of Battle Creek, Mich., Peg (Lowell) Hetzel of Tiffin, Janet (Mark) Leahy of Tiffin, Teres Zimmer of Columbus, Barb (Mike) Houck of Maumee, and Chris (Bob) Baltes of Waterville; 25 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death, along with her parents, were three brothers, Paul, Frank Jr. and infant Karl Kleinhenz; and two grandchildren, Emily and Maria Steyer.
Catherine graduated in 1937 from Calvert High School and in 1938 from Tiffin University. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, and Rosary Altar Society at St. Joseph Catholic Church. She worked at the Tiffin Glass House for more than 15 years, and was a member of the Mothers Club and Twins Club.
She was very family-oriented, and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Catherine was the 1957 Mother of the Year for the state of Ohio. She loved their family tradition of making popcorn balls and springerlies, and was a member of the Kitchen Band and Choir at Kiwanis Manor.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 15, 2009, at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. Gary Walters officiating. A rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
