FOSTORIA - A fire caused moderate damage to Davis & Newcomer Elevator Co. Inc., 420 Columbus Ave., and the building's contents early Sunday morning.

A report at the Fostoria Police Department shows the fire was reported at 3:27 a.m. Sunday. Heavy smoke was coming from the warehouse, which is located between railroad tracks on Columbus Avenue, it states.

According to a report at the Fostoria Fire Department, firefighters found a fire inside the building and extinguished it. There was moderate damage to the building and its contents, and the loss and cause are under investigation, it states.

A police report states a photograph was taken of the west-side door. The entrance door handle was knocked off, and it looked fresh, according to the report.

The report also states the fire was out at 4:26 a.m., and the emergency corps responded to the scene. Firefighters were back in at 11 a.m., according to a report at the fire department.

The captain who was on duty at the time of the fire could not be reached for comment, and a call was placed to the company Sunday evening.

According to the company's Web site, Davis & Newcomer Elevator Co. started in 1921 and has a company-owned 16,000-square-foot shop with office. It offers maintenance, repair and modernization services.
