Tiffin City Schools to host therapist to address bullying problem

December 17, 2008

Tiffin City Schools is doing its part to curb bullying.

Scott Urban, director of instruction and personnel, gave the district's bullying and hazing report at Tuesday's Tiffin City Board of Education meeting. He said from the time school started in August until the present, the district had one reported incident of bullying.

Urban said a board policy requires bullying and hazing numbers to be reported twice a year, at the end of the first semester and at the end of the year. The administration tracks the number of bullying and hazing reports in the buildings, he said.

"It's something we really, really monitor," he said.

Tiffin Middle School is to host Jim Bisenius, a therapist, to present programs about bully-proofing youth.

Suzanne Reinhart, guidance counselor, told board members Family & Children First Council offered to donate $500 for the parent program, and anyone working with children would benefit from the session. The parent training is to be at 7 p.m. Jan. 7 at Tiffin Middle School's cafetorium.

Bisenius is to present programs to students and teachers, too.

"We are really excited about this opportunity," Reinhart said.

Prior to the meeting, Urban said the program will give victims information about how to deal with bullying.

"This is about how to deal with somebody who is bullying you or harassing you," he said.

The board accepted a donation of $1,200 for the trainings from Elizabeth Zbinden, a Tiffin resident, during its meeting Tuesday evening.

Before the meeting, Urban said Zbinden witnessed a bullying incident and wanted to make sure no child went through it.

"She said she'd be willing to pay for something," he said.
