Self defense class being offered

POSTED: September 26, 2008

Free self defense courses for women are to be offered in Tiffin in the basement of the Presbyterian Church at the corner of East Market and South Monroe streets.

Classes are free and is to be offered 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Oct. 2, 10 a.m. Oct. 6 and 9 a.m. Oct. 7. Each class is limited to 50 woman, so prior registration is required.

City Administrator and former police chief Wayne Stephens is to be teaching the hour-and-a-half-long class.

Stephens said, with the rash of attacks against women, even though a suspect has been arrested, the classes can help women be prepared to defend themselves, and not only in Tiffin.

"This can help. I don't expect every woman to even hang around Tiffin. You move or travel up to Toledo, Cleveland; someplace with higher crime rates, you need to be able to defend yourself," Stephens said.

Stephens said the first part of the presentation will address common sense ways for someone to prevent an attack and then finish up with ways to defend themselves.

To register, call the city administrator's office at (419) 448-5402. People attending the class are advised to wear casual clothing.
