A person was killed Monday evening in a Scipio Township accident at the intersection of TR 122 and SR 18, northeast of Republic.

The unidentified person was a backseat passenger in a 1998 Ford Escort driven by Nathaniel A. Schroth, 21, of Tiffin, according to a release from the State Highway Patrol.

Schroth was headed westbound on TR 122 when he failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck on the driver's side of his car by a northeast-bound 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass on SR 18 driven by Evan Ebersole, 52, of Republic, according to the release.

Ebersole and his passenger, Sharon Ebersole, 56, were taken to Mercy Hospital of Tiffin.

Schroth was extracted by Jaws of Life and taken by Life Flight to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, according to the release.

His condition was not available.

Another passenger in Schroth's car was taken to Mercy Hospital of Tiffin with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the release.

Sgt. Brett Gockstetter of the state patrol said alcohol was suspected in the crash, and according to the release, seat belt usage was unknown.

Bloomville Fire Department, Republic Fire Department, Tiffin Fire Department and the Seneca County Department of Public Safety responded to the accident.

The Seneca County Prosecutor's Office also was at the scene.
