FREMONT - As an administrator at EHOVE Career Center in Milan, Greg Edinger knew about Vanguard-Sentinel Career Centers in Fremont. Edinger said the superintendent's vacancy at Vanguard-Sentinel offered someone wanting to stay in career education a great opportunity.

The school board selected Edinger to be its next superintendent during a meeting July 17.

"My next goal was to be superintendent, and (I) wanted to stay in career tech," he said. "I just believe so much in career tech. I wouldn't want to do anything else."

Chris Widman, president of Vanguard-Sentinel's board of education, said a board committee had preliminary interviews to find the superintendent, and the entire board conducted final interviews. He said Edinger's leadership positions, experience and passion for education stuck out.

"He has a management background with some experience outside the educational world," he said. "I think, personally, I'm very excited about having his presence in our system. ... We're very excited about having him come on board."

Edinger said he has an associate's degree in business management from the University of Toledo and a bachelor's degree in business education from Bowling Green State University. He received his master's degree in administration from Ashland University.

Edinger said he had 12 years of business experience before entering the education field, including three years in the military.

He said when he entered education, he started as the business services coordinator in EHOVE's adult education program, and he gained experience in career and satellite technology. He became the assistant director and principal at EHOVE, or Erie Huron Ottawa Vocational Education.

"This is my first superintendent position," he said.

Superintendent David Danhoff is working until Aug. 31, and Edinger started working with him as the assistant superintendent Aug. 1 to learn about the school system.

"That's been exciting, just having the opportunity to work with Dave for 30 days," he said.

Edinger's family includes his wife, Mary Ellen, and daughters, Jorden and Julia. He is from Huron, which allows him to drive 30 minutes and be at Sentinel or Vanguard.

Edinger said the attitude is positive throughout the school system, and he wants to continue that. He said he's been impressed the staff members immediately talk about their programs and what they do for students.

"They just have been very proud of what they've accomplished," he said.

Edinger said his first goal is to meet everyone in his first few months, and he is looking forward to getting the year started.

"I'm big on student success, student results, and I'm just looking forward to meeting all the students," he said. "School can't start soon enough."
