Sewer project starting

Inspections and cleaning are to be done on Tiffin sewers in the area between Rock Creek, Hunter and East Market streets, from the Sandusky River to Greenlawn Drive, next week.
Acting City Engineer Mario Livojevic said this is normal preliminary work that will allow the city to draft plans for the third phase of the sewer separation project. Inspections will allow the city to know what's there, what shape the sewers are in, and whether they can reuse any of them, Livojevic said.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has mandated the separation of combined sewers. One reason is health concerns because combined sewers allow, on occasion, raw sewage to be dumped into the river.
Phase three is estimated to cost $3.4 million, with the entire project estimated a couple years ago at $51 million, according to Mayor Jim Boroff.
The work is scheduled for next week, and it's estimated to take three weeks.
Tiffin officials contracted the work to be done by Down Under Services, Livojevic said. The company's vehicles and equipment may block streets, but through traffic will be allowed.
