The ninth annual Sentinel Career Center Senior Recognition Night was May 20 at The Ritz Theater in Tiffin, to honor the 196 career program completers. Students received their career passport, and awards were presented.
The Sentinel Career Center Director’s Award was presented to students who have excelled in grades, attendance, involvement at Sentinel, enthusiasm and willingness to work to the best of their abilities, attitude towards others and their future plans in regards to following their field of study.

The recipient of the “Sentinel Standards for Tomorrow Scholarship” sponsored by the Vanguard-Sentinel Education Association was Brandy Hoerig, Academy of Business, Columbian.
CLYDE — The Debra Dell Foundation was established in 2005 to remember Dell, who lost her battle with cancer in 2004. Her family established a fund to assist with academic programs and activities at Clyde St. Mary School. Gene Englehart, Gene Englehart Jr. and Peggy San Gregory, all of Tiffin, serve on the board of trustees.
Children who received $100 scholarships are first-grader Kacee Hemby, daughter of John and Cheri Hemby; second-grader Leasha Bailey, daughter of Lynne and Tom Bailey; second-grader Heidi Marshall, daughter of Heather and Marc Marshall; third-grader Jeremy Booth, son of Karen and Doug Booth; fourth-grader Chloe Liebold, daughter of Michelle and Eric Liebold; and fifth-grader Emma Steinbauer, daughter of Tami and Bill Steinbauer.

The Seneca County Medical Society selected Jaclyn Miller, a graduating senior at Old Fort High School, as the winner of its $1,000 scholarship award. Applicants must be residents of Seneca County and enrolled in an accredited educational institution in a health care or medical related program. Miller is the daughter of Kathy Miller and the late John Miller.

WESTERVILLE — Eric Frisch, a 2004 Columbian High School graduate, is to be the student speaker at the June 15 Otterbein College commencement. Frisch has chosen the topic, “Happiness in an Uncertain World,” to present to his fellow classmates.
Frisch has been an Otterbein student since September 2004 and is to receive a bachelor’s degree in music. During his college years, he has been a musician for Otterbein Christian Fellowship, co-captain and captain of the Cardinal Marching Band drum line, and percussion section leader for the Wind Ensemble. He served on the selection committee for the current Wind Ensemble director and participated in the 2007 OPCICA band.
Achieving inclusion on the dean’s list during every quarter, Frisch also received the 2007 Ellen M. Jones ’23 Memorial Endowed Award and 2008 Cardinal Leadership awards in music and student life.
Upon graduation, he plans to remain in the Columbus area, serving as worship arts director for Centerpoint Church in Lewis Center and percussion instructor for the Otterbein marching band and the Big Walnut High School marching band. Frisch is the son of David and Lisa Frisch of Saint Clairsville.

FREMONT — Terra Community College is to host Instant Admission Day 8 a.m.-7 p.m. June 11.
People can learn about Terra’s academics, faculty, courses and programs, and get accepted on the spot for fall semester 2008. Also, people can talk to financial aid advisers and schedule placement tests.
Terra does not have an application fee. People can bring their academic records from high school, GED or college, and if they want to discuss financial aid, they should bring their 2007 income tax records.
Those who complete an application during the event are to be eligible to win a $50 Terra CollegeStore gift certificate or one of five $25 gas cards.
No appointment is necessary for the event in Roy Klay Hall, Suite A-100. Fall classes at Terra begin Aug. 25. For more information, call (419) 559-2349.
FOSTORIA — In recognition of its child care program and its ongoing commitment to children, Wonderland received a Two-Star Step Up To Quality Award from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services’ Bureau of Child Care and Development, the state agency responsible for licensing and promoting high standards among Ohio’s child care programs. During the National Safety Belt Awareness Program conducted from May 19 to June 1, the Sycamore Police Department held a safety belt poster contest at Mohawk elementary school. The winner of this year’s contest is Taylor Hushour, a fifth grader. She received a certificate of recognition from the police department and a $25 gift certificate at East of Chicago Pizza. AKRON — Abigail Miller of Tiffin received a juris doctor degree from the University of Akron.
BLUFFTON — Chad McCray, Tiffin, and Shannon Williams, New Riegel, received master’s degrees in business administration from Bluffton University.

FOSTORIA — Tonia Groves of Fostoria is the recipient of the Fostoria Area Women Promoting Women Scholarship. Two smaller scholarships were awarded to Linda Elchert and Victoria Gramatikas.
ST. PAUL, Minn. — Christopher Goshe of Tiffin received a $750 scholarship from the CHS Foundation, the major giving entity of CHS Inc., an energy, grains and foods company.
Goshe is one of 50 students receiving scholarships through the CHS Foundation Two-Year College Scholarship Program. A total of $37,500 was awarded through the program this year.

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Valparaiso University student Patrick Lay of Sycamore had his artwork featured in an exhibition at the university’s Brauer Museum of Art. Lay received the $50 Brauer Museum Award for his oil on canvas painting “’til we drop.” He also presented a charcoal on paper work titled “In the Waiting Room.”
He is a 2005 graduate of Calvert High School and the son of Lorraine Lay.
