Late blasts give Dragons sweep on road
LOCAL COLLEGESELKINS, W. Va. — Tiffin’s softball team slugged three home runs in its final two at-bats to give the Dragons a 7-4 win over Davis & Elkins in the day’s second game. Tiffin took the opener, 4-2.
Jessica Ramirez had two of TU’s late homers in the second game. A solo shot in the sixth gave the Dragons (12-5) a 3-2 lead. After Nicole Romero led off the top of the seventh with a homer to tie things at 4-4, Ramirez slugged a three-run homer with two outs to provide the winning margin.
Pitcher Krista Sowers went the distance in both games to improve her record to 8-1. Sowers allowed two earned runs in each game, struck out 10 in the first game and whiffed nine in the second game.
Cyla Hawkins (double) and Kristina Rendle (two runs, double) had two hits each in the first game, and Romero knocked in a pair of runs. The Dragons took a 1-0 lead into the seventh and tacked on three runs in the final frame.
Tiffany Smith contributed two hits in the nightcap.
Tiffin tennis struggles on road
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — After rolling to an 8-1 win Saturday over Transylvania, Tiffin’s tennis team found little success at Northern Kentucky, getting shut out.
The Dragons’ closest match came at second doubles, where Teauna Long and Beth Clark dropped an 8-5 decision. Jessie Stefanov/Ashley Herschner and Faith Greenawalt/Vicki Woods lost identical 8-2 matches.
Woods’ 8-4 loss at in the No. 6 slot was the closest singles match for Tiffin (5-3). Greenwalt lost, 8-3, at No. 3, and Erika Bailey lost 8-0 at No. 5. Long, Herschner and Stefanov all dropped 8-1 decisions.
