Earlier day’s economic woes invoked by ‘Oliver!’

Return to Victorian England as Mohawk High School presents its spring musical, “Oliver!” at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Set in London in 1850, the play is based on the Charles Dickens novel, “Oliver Twist.” Kate Niederkohr is directing. The curtain opens to reveal the halls of a workhouse where a crowd of scraggly children are having a “meal” of gruel. Mr. Bumble and Widow Corney, played by Hunter Jordan and Noelle Huffman, respectively, oversee the children as they sing “Food, Glorious Food.” The orphans include David Dietrich, Iris Deatrich, Wyatt Price, Chet Margraf, Olivia Allomong, Amanda Wildman, Chad Beekman, Tabby Goeller, Maddison Cordell, Courtney Grant, Jenna Fawcett, Mercedes Snyder, Abby Hefner, Trevor Zender, Domonique Smith, Kylie Volkmar, Autumn Hartson, Taylor Rathborn, Drew Hawley, Nathan Kimmet, Triston Kindle and Brandon Flood. All is well until Oliver dares to ask for a second helping.

Lakota razing junior high
AMSDEN — The Lakota Local School District’s former junior high school is being demolished.
Superintendent Rebecca Heimlich said the demolition project started March 1, and the crew has until the end of May to complete it.
