Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center has grown from a single hospital to a comprehensive health system offering the Northwest Ohio region a full continuum of care.

Blanchard Valley Health Association is the non-profit parent corporation of an integrated regional health system based in Findlay, a unique micropolitan community located in Northwest Ohio. Governed by a community board of trustees representing large and small business, education, law, medicine and finance, the Health Association oversees the operations of the system.

BVHA has a long history of service to Findlay and the surrounding area. The hospital, Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center, which is the anchor subsidiary of BVHA was founded in 1891 as the Findlay Home for Friendless Women and Children. As the community of Findlay has experienced growth and prosperity, so has the health system with major expansions occurring in 1958, 1967, 1977 and throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s and into the new millennium with the latest additions of the Birchaven Retirement Village and Blanchard Valley Regional Cancer Center, both of which opened in 2003 on Findlay’s East Side.

As a 151-bed acute care facility, the major service lines include:

Blanchard Valley Health Association is one of the largest employers in the area with 1,800+ associates and serves an eight-county area which includes Hancock, Allen, Putnam, Henry, Wood, Seneca, Wyandot, and Hardin Counties.

A dedicated group of more than 1,200 volunteers support the Health Association through their contributions of both time and money.

Fostoria Community Hospital

Fostoria Community Hospital is a not-for-profit, critical access hospital providing quality, cost-effective health care for the residents of Fostoria and surrounding area. The JCAHO-accredited hospital in rural northwest Ohio offers inpatient medical services, emergency care, diagnostic services, general surgery, and outpatient treatment and therapy services. FCH promotes the health and welfare of the community through numerous health education and wellness programs and outreach services. Through its membership in the ProMedica Health System, FCH is able to offer fully integrated, comprehensive medical care services.

Acute Services

The inpatient hospital was founded in 1930 through the efforts of Fostoria community leaders. It includes beds for patients requiring medical/surgical, short stay skilled nursing, obstetrics, pediatrics, and intensive/coronary care including 4 monitored ICCU beds and 8 step down beds. All inpatient rooms and units were renovated in 1999.

The surgery center features 2 major and 2 minor surgical suites for inpatients and outpatients serving general surgery, orthopedic, ophthalmology, ear/nose/throat, OB/GYN, and urological procedures. All new facilities for the surgery department were opened in February 2003.

The emergency department, built in 1997, is an eight-bed department, including two trauma suites. All staff are certified in ACLS and PALS with a physician on site 24-hours a day.

Treatment Services

The outpatient clinics within the hospital provide dialysis, chemotherapy, IV therapy, and blood transfusions.

The Advanced Rehabilitation Center is the outpatient therapy service of Fostoria Community Hospital providing comprehensive physical, occupational and speech therapies and athletic training with additional services in aquatic therapy, geriatric care and industrial injury treatments.
Medical education and exercise programs include diabetic self-management education program and cardiac rehabilitation.

Extensive home health services are provided through Fostoria Home Care, including skilled nursing, patient assessments, IV therapy, personal care (home health aide), physical, occupational and speech therapies, patient/family education, respite care and medical social services. A registered nurse is on call 24-hours a day, everyday. FHC has served the community for more than 18 years.

Diagnostic Services
Diagnostic services are available for both inpatients and outpatients. Cardiac testing services include stress tests, cardiac nuclear imaging, echocardiograms, electrocardiograms (EKGs), Holter and event monitoring. Electroencephalograms (EEGs) are available for neurological testing. Pulmonary testing services include pulmonary function testing, arterial blood gas testing, apnea monitoring, and overnight and exercise oximetry.

Clinical laboratory testing is performed in the CAP accredited lab on site. Tests not performed on site are transported same-day to an approved Reference Lab.

Radiology and other imaging services include CAT scans, nuclear medicine procedures, ultrasound exams, radiographic and fluoroscopic xrays, mammography, bone density testing, vascular testing and MRI service. Since 2001, a new CT scanner, new MRI, new echocardiography unit and new mammography unit have been acquired.

Gastrointestinal endoscopy is performed in the surgical suite.

Antepartum testing -- both nonstress and stress, is conducted in the obstetrics department.
A new Sleep Disorders Center was opened in 2001 to test, treat and monitor persons with sleep disorders.

Physician Community
The approximately 30 active members of the medical staff of Fostoria Community Hospital are comprised of a core of 20 primary care physicians supported by general surgeons, anesthesiologists, pathologists and radiologists.

FCH operates Family Health Connection, a primary care clinic for patients of all ages who do not have a local primary care physician.

Physician specialty clinics are operated on site and at satellite facilities on campus. Clinics include cardiology, nephrology, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, physical medicine, pulmonary medicine, urology and vascular surgery.

Community Outreach
Occupational medicine offers comprehensive services to area businesses and industries including injury evaluations and care, physicals, ancillary testing and drug testing, as well as assistance with environmental safety and health programs.
Community health and wellness programs and services are offered through the Positive Lifestyles Department. Health screenings, health education, and lifestyle modification programs are included.
Other community services include van transportation for medical appointments, retail pharmacy, durable medical equipment provider, Meals on Wheels, a personal emergency response system and health ministry program.

ProMedica Health System
ProMedica Health System is comprised of 69 major corporations and joint ventures, with more than 15,000 employees, 2,700 physicians, and over 209 facilities located in its 23-county service area in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. It includes 11 hospitals; ProMedica Continuing Care Services with senior, rehabilitation, and integrative services; ProMedica Physician Group, a network of primary care physicians and specialists; Paramount Health Care, the largest HMO in northwest Ohio; and the Health, Education and Research Corporation, with more than 40 academic affiliations. ProMedica facilities treated more than 2 million patients in 2003.

Mercy Hospital of Tiffin

Mercy Hospital of Tiffin is a general, acute facility serving Tiffin, Seneca County, and Wyandot County.

Its medical staff offers primary care and a wide range of specialty services. Mercy's staff includes 17 primary care physicians and more than 65 specialty care physicians.

General patient services include an obstetrical complex with traditional and birthing room deliveries, hydrotherapy birthing deliveries, surgical unit, an intensive care and a progressive care unit. Complementing these are Mercy's emergency care center with 24-hour physician coverage and a surgical suite with major, routine and outpatient operating facilities.

Mercy Hospital of Tiffin offers ample visiting hours and child's visitations.

Mercy's diagnostic services offer the testing capabilities of x-ray, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, mammography, DEXA Scanning, CAT scanning, a non-invasive vascular laboratory, oncology, cardiology, lung function, gastroenterology, neurology, and a clinical laboratory. Rehabilitation programs are provided through cardiopulmonary, cardiology and physical therapy.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), a diagnostic tool that uses an extremely powerful magnet, provides pictures of tissue anatomy in a safe and comfortable manner. Mercy also has a full-time oncologist/hematologist on staff.

Women's health care services offered include. Sentinel Node Scanning that can determine lymph node involvement, thus helping to determine the extent of surgery required. Stereotactic Breast Biopsy uses advanced technology for multiple tissue sampling using a single, sutureless incision. A Mammotome Biopsy system uses ultrasound technology to guide breast biopsies. Finally, Mammoscintigraphy, a nuclear study, can help identify tumors that may not be visible on mammograms.

Mercy's Outpatient Services department accommodates specialists in a wide range of medical fields including allergy, cardiothoracic surgery, nephrology, neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, pediatric cardiology, pediatric orthopedics, physical medicine, plastic/reconstructive surgery, pulmonary medicine, and vascular surgery.

Mercy has provided Sleep Improvement Lab services since 1996 and is accredited through the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Physical therapy is provided through Optima Rehabilitation Services, Ltd., a joint venture between Mercy Hospital of Tiffin and P.T. Services. Optima provides physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, and aquatic therapy among other services.

The hospital's Wound Management program provides a multidisciplinary approach to patients with wounds and ulcers that fail to heal or are slow to heal due to a number of disorders. This program provides evaluation and management by physicians, nurses, and others with specialized training.

Mercy is part of a joint venture with The Betty Jane Memorial Rehabilitation Center, St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, and SAB, a group of nephrology physicians that provides kidney dialysis at The Betty Jane Center.

Mercy's Transitional Care Unit provides a true continuum of care for patients. The unit, which is fully accredited through the Ohio Department of Health, is designed for patients who have been discharged from the hospital but are not ready to return to their home or to a nursing home and are in need of skilled nursing care. That care could include physical, speech and occupational therapy after a minimum three-day acute care stay.

The hospital offers a variety of community education and health promotion programs and classes and a full schedule of childbirth education classes. Health screenings, individualized health risk appraisals and lifestyle management classes are available to area corporations for their employee wellness programs through Mercy's Occupational Health Services. Occupational Health Services occupies an area on the hospital's first floor and provides injury management, industrial rehabilitation, employee capability assessments, an employee assistance program, preferred provider contracting, consulting, physical examinations, job risk analysis and occupational health nursing.

McAuley Health Services provides primary care for low-income residents who do not have a family physician. This service is located at The Bradley Building located in downtown Tiffin. Outreach programs for area residents include Mercy Tele-Care, a telephone contact service for persons living alone or who are alone during the day; Lifeline, a personal emergency response system installed in the home; and Mercy Express, a handicapped accessible van to transport senior citizens to health care appointments.

Mercy works in conjunction with area congregations and healthcare agencies to assist with Health Ministries of North Central Ohio, a parish nurse and health ministry program that reaches out to members of area parishes to provide healthcare assistance and education.
