Sunny for St. Joe; Gray for Calvert
BASCOM — It wasn’t exactly a repeat performance against Calvert for Fremont St. Joe junior Eric Gray, but it surely was as dominating.
The Streaks’ left-hander struck out 12 in a one-hitter, and St. Joe advanced to Division IV district competition with a 6-0 win over Calvert at Hopewell-Loudon.
When the teams met April 7 in a Midland Athletic League contest, Gray fanned 18 and allowed four hits in St. Joe’s 5-2 win.
“He’s had some games where he’s been about as good, but today might have been his best overall game,” first-year St. Joe (16-4) coach Kevin Yeckley said. “Most of the season he’s blown guys away with his fastball and curveball, but now he’s starting to develop that third pitch (changeup).”
Gray tossed a few changeups, and he struck out batters on all three pitches, but his above-average fastball and biting 12-to-6 curve alone would have been too much for the Senecas (8-15) to handle.
