Countering substance abuse
The Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Seneca, Sandusky and Wyandot Counties just submitted an application to the federal government for a Drug Free Communities Support Grant for Seneca County. Providers, staff and I have been working on this grant application for what seems like months – oh, wait, it was months! Our chances of receiving an award are very slim since we are competing with all U.S. states and territories; but it’s like the lottery – you have to play to win. Why only Seneca County? Two reasons: Sandusky County is applying separately through its Health Department, and Wyandot County does not have an existing substance abuse coalition which would meet the eligibility criteria. However, should we receive this grant, we can then apply for a mentoring grant, which would allow us to help Wyandot County form a coalition to address alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in that community.
