Five things about our local college sports sceneMon, November 9, 2009 @ 4:03AM Just some quick observations from this week: 1. I've written much over the past five years in praise of Heidelberg volleyball/wrestling coach Jason Miller. But it's hard enough to coach one team --in one sport -- to the top 25 in Division III. Miller has done it in the same year with two different teams and two different sports. Miller's a local guy -- a Hopewell-Loudon graduate. I often wonder where he gets the drive from. But because the teams are so good, I'm sure many people are glad he has it. 2. Rudy Brownell wanted to nothing to do with credit Saturday when I called him about his Tiffin University men's soccer team. The Dragons had just won the GLIAC Tournament. Brownell praised his players, then asked if I could mention some people in the story, everyone from TU President Paul Marion to AD Lonny Allen to the school's SID Shane O'Donnell. I told him I'd see what I could do. As it turned out, the thank-yous didn't make it in the reca.

NovemberThu, November 12, 2009 @ 5:29PM Considering its miserable track record, November is doing pretty well this year. Those of us who suffer with borthdays in this generally dreary month do not have high expectations for good weather. I always envied my sister whose birthday is in June, offering the opportunity for picnics on the beach, while mine was usually graced with drizzle, fog and cold winds. But this year we still have sunshine and reasonable temperatures, with things in the garden still looking fairly cheerful. I picked a bunch of roses this week, and the Knock Outs still have buds with the promise of more to come. The Lemon Meringue and Fourth of July climbers climbers still have blossoms, and the New Dawn makes up for a lack of blooms with a profuse showing of rose hips. There are flowers on the deutzia and a few coreopsis showed their golden faces when I ruthlessly cut them back this week.

State volleyballThu, November 12, 2009 @ 5:37PM After Norwalk St. Paul swept Tuscarawas Central Catholic in the first Division IV semifinal (25-14, 25-12, 25-15), Hopewell-Loudon and Marion Local have started their warmups. About 17 minutes to go there. Marion Local took the first set 25-15, finishing with a block kill and an ace. Hopewell-Loudon scored the first 3 points and led 9-6 before Marion Local ripped off a 15-2 run. Marion Local took the second set, 25-16. After three Richey kills tied things at 7, the Flyers' Lochtefeld had two straight block kills to start 12-2 run. timeout H-L in the third, it's 11-6 Marion Local, it will take a major rally by H-L simply to extend to four sets H-L fights back from a 14-6 deficit to tie at 16, but Marion Local runs off the final nine points to complete the fourth sweep of the day. That's all for no.

The Cleveland Browns - Yikes!!Fri, November 20, 2009 @ 5:23PM Did you read the article in today's A-T about the Browns anemic offense? I did and the only thing I can say other that yikes is - PATHETIC! I recall the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of Coach John McKay. I also remember his comment about the execution of his offense. That was a classic. Nice uniforms bad team - that's the best way to sum up those swashbucklers of the mid 1970's. Now we have MY team used in the same converstation with those horrible Bucs and what's worse - the Browns offense might be worse. Can that be possible? In a few words - I think so. The last Browns wide receiver to score a touchdown? You have to go back to November 2, 2008. Over a year ago!! The last Browns running back to score a TD? How about November 17, 2008. Holy Cow!!!! How can this possibly be? Bringing in Eric Mangenious to be the head coach hasn't made much difference. He did manage to get rid of a couple of bad boys in Kellen Winslow and Braylon Edwards.

Browns vs. IndiansThu, October 22, 2009 @ 6:18PM With Bobby Valentine in Cleveland to interview for the job of managing the Indians, my attention has been drawn from the woeful state of the Browns. Let’s be clear about this: Between the two, the Browns are much worse. The Indians had a bad year in 2009. The Browns are having a bad decade. Through the first 10 years of their re-existance, the Browns were a cumulative 54-106. That’s a 0.337 record. Over that same period, the Indians went 848-772, for a 0.523 record. Consider this: This year, Major League Baseball’s postseason was shot full of former Tribe players. It’s likely Cliff Lee will face C.C. Sabathia in Game 1 of the World Series. How many former Browns players were on playoff teams last season? (Charlie Frye doesn’t count). Here’s another way to look at it: Had the Indians held on to five players in the past 10 years, it would be very likely the Tribe would be headed to the Series.
