HU-B-W updates

Sat, October 24, 2009 @ 2:43PM We pick things up with 3 minutes left in the half, Heidelberg leads, 14-3. Scoring was as follows: Heidelberg went 61 yards in four plays, its offense wasn't contained at all on the first drive. Quarterback Andrew Miller was picking B-W apart, and found a wide open Clifton Powell over the middle for a 22-yard touchdown. (13:21) Heidelberg added to the lead with 3:16 left in the half, when Jesse Hawkins lined up for a 35-yard field goal. But Miller, who was holding, jumped up and looped a pass to Anthony Washington for another TD. David Cantu hit a short field goal early in the second quarter to make it 14-3. Heidelberg had another opportunity to score, and had the ball at the B-W 3. But Miller was sacked back at the 20. It set up another Hawkins field goal attempt, but again, Miller jumped up, and threw to the end zone. This time he was intercepted. I'll have to ask Hallett if that was a plan or if Miller improvised.

Geraniums

Tue, October 27, 2009 @ 1:04PM This blog is for the people who have questions about keeping geraniums through the winter. I have written about it in my column several times and do not want to use up mre column space, but I am getting so many questions, on the phone, email, grocery store, front door etc. that I need to address it. This is the way I do it. Dig up the plants and shake all the dirt off the roots. Then cut back the tops to about six inches, removing most or all of the leaves. Then either tie the plants in bunches and hang up in a coolish, darkish place, or put them in brown bags or simply on a shelf somewhere. Mine go on a dark shelf under the workbench in a cold basement. And just forget them. About the end of February or the beginning of March check them, and you should see new green leaves appearing. When they are leafed out, I put the roots in a bucket of water for a couple of days, and then pot each one up in a 6 inch pot with regular potting soil.

Hopewell-Loudon volleyball heading to state

Sat, November 7, 2009 @ 3:59PM ELIDA — The momentum Hopewell-Loudon created from regional semifinal sweep two days earlier simply rolled over to Saturday's finals. Now, the Chieftains hope they can ride the wave all the way to suburban Dayton. Hopewell-Loudon held off a couple Columbus Grove charges in the first set, and never trailed outside of a brief two-point hole in the third set as it rolled to a 25-20, 25-15, 25-13 victory in the Division IV regional finals, earning the program's first state tournament berth since 2001. Hopewell-Loudon will play two-time defending state champion Maria Stein Marion Local in Thursday's second state semifinal at Wright State's Nutter Center (approximately 6 p.m.). The unbeaten Flyers downed Sidney Lehman Catholic, 25-20, 25-17, 25-20, to win the Vandalia Regional. H-L's match was played at noon, before most other regional finals Saturday, to accomodate the Chieftain fans wishing to then travel across the state to watch the football team in the playoffs.

The *#^*% Yankees

Fri, November 6, 2009 @ 10:56PM The best team money can buy won their 27th World Series Championship this week. I can't believe anyone outside of the Big Apple really cares. Most, like me, were rooting for whoever the blasted Yankees were playing. I actually have a soft spot for the Phillies as my mother was from West Chester, near Philly. I actually have seen games in three different baseball stadiums in Philadelphia, having been to Connie Mack stadium as a kid. Veterans Stadium and the current Citizens Bank Park has seen my fanny in their seats. It really didn't matter who was playing however. If it is not the Tribe, I will not be riveted to the screen. I am not likely to really cheer for any other team, but I detest the Yankees. I'll give them the early pennants. The last few years though, it is hard to stomach them. They have more money than anyone else and can attract the big name free agents. They are not afraid to sign admitted steroid users too, which is another reason to dislike them.

Browns vs. Indians

Thu, October 22, 2009 @ 6:18PM With Bobby Valentine in Cleveland to interview for the job of managing the Indians, my attention has been drawn from the woeful state of the Browns. Let’s be clear about this: Between the two, the Browns are much worse. The Indians had a bad year in 2009. The Browns are having a bad decade. Through the first 10 years of their re-existance, the Browns were a cumulative 54-106. That’s a 0.337 record. Over that same period, the Indians went 848-772, for a 0.523 record. Consider this: This year, Major League Baseball’s postseason was shot full of former Tribe players. It’s likely Cliff Lee will face C.C. Sabathia in Game 1 of the World Series. How many former Browns players were on playoff teams last season? (Charlie Frye doesn’t count). Here’s another way to look at it: Had the Indians held on to five players in the past 10 years, it would be very likely the Tribe would be headed to the Series.
