TU women vs. Lake Erie
February 23, 2012 - Zach Baker
If my math is correct, Tiffin University has clinched a first round home game in next week's GLIAC tournament. But right now against the Storm, TU really is struggling offensively. It trails Lake Erie 10-4, having made only 2 of 9 shots. 14:51.
Jillian Adams has done a nice job creating. She's made a pair of layups and was just fouled on another attempt. 13:47 remains in the first half, with the Dragons trailing 10-8.
Why this game is important: If Tiffin wins out, it will be tied for the second-best record in the league. While it likely would be the three seed (it lost to Michigan Tech earlier this year), if Michigan Tech loses either of its next two games, TU gets the No. 2 seed, and perhaps bolsters its case for an at-large bid if it can make the finals.
Three Storm players have hit a 3, while the Dragons haven't hit any. TU still is really having a tough time with outside shots. It trails, 15-13 with 9:19 left in the first half.
With 7:56 left in the game, Mandy Jaeb and Karli Mast still haven't scored. Dragons still trail 15-13 with 7:22 left.
Dragons are turning the ball over like its their job. Haven't scored in almost four minutes.
Jessica Harris is playing great. Everybody else isn't. Dragons trail 17-15 with 4:50 left. Jaeb, Mast and Johnston all haven't scored. Harris has eight.
A Mast jumper, followed by an Amanda Baute jumper, make it 19-17 TU at the 2:09 mark. The way this game has gone, someone from Lake Erie will hit a 3.
Dragons led 22-17, but Lake Erie closed on a 7-0 run, including a Jen Caiola trey from the left wing at the buzzer, and have a 24-22 lead at break.
The Dragons, as poorly as they've played, are lucky to be two down.
12 turnovers by TU, 0 of 5 from 3. That sums it up there. Lake Erie is shooting worse, but it made four 3s. TU is killing Lake Erie on the boards, 22-13. Harris has nine rebounds. But it's been a tough night for TU in a few areas, which isn't a great sign with tournament play looming.
TU started this half worse than the last one, turning the ball over on its first two possessions and falling down seven. But TU has rallied, thanks in large part to Jaeb, who has four, and the game is tied at 32 with 14:32 left.
A Jaeb 3 had TU up 36-32, but Lake Erie has rallied, with Caiola getting three offensive rebounds before finally hitting a stickback.Baute missed the front end of a -and-1 in between. 36-36 at 12-minute mark.
After an 8-0 Lake Erie run put it up four, Dragons have gone on a 5-0 run to take 41-40 lead. 9:46 left. Both teams will be in two shot bonus from now on, so it could come down to foul shooting.
After being cold all day, Mast finds an opening on the right wing and buries a 3. Then, after a dfensive stop, Johnston finds herself alone on right wing. Bang. TU leads 55-47 with 3:12 left. Biggest lead for either team.
With 1:20 left, TU leads 58-54. It has the ball and a fresh shot clock with 58 seconds to go. TU has really had trouble holding onto the ball, even when it hasn't led to turnovers. Tiffin leads 60-54. 24 seconds left with Johnston at the foul line. One free throw should clinch it. She makes the first and the second. Should do it.
